Skills for your dispensing optician resume
A dispensing optician helps customers choose eyeglasses and contact lenses. Unlike ophthalmic opticians (also known as optometrists), dispensing opticians aren’t licensed to perform vision tests but are crucial for fitting and adjusting eyewear, managing orders, and overseeing optometrist offices or retail stores.
In addition to a high school diploma, some states require dispensing opticians to pass National Contact Lens Examiners (NCLE) or American Board of Opticianry (ABO) licensing exams.
You’ll need excellent soft skills (personality qualities that affect how you interact with others) when serving customers as a dispensing optician. List some of the following soft skills on your resume to show employers you can provide professional, high-quality care:
- Listening skills
- Sales skills
- Customer service skills
- Phone skills
- Communication skills
- Interpersonal skills
- Organizational skills
- Attention to detail
- Time management skills
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
If you’re unsure which resume format will properly showcase your skills, go with a chronological resume if you have work experience but a functional format when starting out.
Additionally, dispensing opticians must have technical skills (or hard skills developed through training) to assist optometrists. So include some of these hard skills related to eye care and optical fittings on your resume:
- Glasses and contact lens fitting
- Lens edging
- Glasses repair and maintenance
- Order management
- Inventory management
- Knowledge of prescriptions and medical terminology
- Face measurement (interocular distance, bridge, eye size, and temple length)

- Performing pre-tests (e.g., tonometry tests, visual field tests, blood pressure, autorefractor tests)
- Insurance and medical billing
- Recordkeeping
