How to write your night auditor resume
Leisure travel boomed in 2023, with the demand for hospitality workers far greater than the available supply. Employers are actively hiring, including for the night auditor role.
Night auditors are responsible for end-of-day bookkeeping and account reconciliation. At many hotels, night auditor duties also include managing the front desk and assisting with guest services.
Whether you’re an experienced hotel night auditor or just getting into the hospitality industry, follow these three tips to write an eye-catching night auditor resume:
1. Customize your night auditor resume to the job description
Research your target hotel or motel, familiarizing yourself with its mission and the types of guests who stay there. Then customize each part of your resume to show employers that you’re interested in working for them specifically.
Start by highlighting your most job-relevant qualifications and naming the hotel when you write your resume introduction. See how one candidate introduces their experience, qualifications, and skills in this resume summary tailored to a specific job ad:
Additionally, match each night auditor job description as closely as you can. For example, while some hotels separate the night auditor and night-shift front desk roles, most hotels combine the two into the “night auditor” job title. So if your target workplace combines the two job descriptions, ensure your work experience and skills section emphasize both your auditing and customer service skills.
Also, tailor your resume to each job by using keywords from the job description. Doing so will help your resume to pass applicant tracking systems (ATS) and let busy hiring managers quickly see that you fit their needs.
For example, take these bullets from two different job postings:
Posting 1: Balance all revenue and settlement accounts nightly
Posting 2: Balance and audit room, food and beverage, and telephone revenue for accuracy
While the skills needed to complete these tasks are essentially the same, a candidate should use the term settlement accounts when responding to Posting 1 and words like audit and food and beverage when addressing Posting 2.
2. Use numbers to describe your work experience
To make your night auditor resume stand out, describe your accomplishments and qualifications with hard numbers in your resume’s work experience section.
Below are a few examples of types of numbers you can include to enhance your night auditor resume’s work experience section:
- size of the accounts managed (e.g., reconciled nightly accounts worth over $15,000)
- number of errors caught and fixed
- number of reports generated over a certain period of time
- measures of accuracy (e.g., for data entry, reports, etc.)
- measures of efficiency (e.g., time needed to balance the ledger, resolve guest service issues, etc.)
- number of guests helped daily
- size of the hotel overseen (e.g., managed accounts for a 400-room hotel)
- number of people trained or managed
3. Highlight your relevant education and certifications
While employers value experience more highly than education, degrees in the following areas can help boost your application:
- Administration
- Accounting
- Business
- Hospitality
Additionally, listing certifications on your resume also shows employers you can perform night auditing duties well. Examples of certifications relevant to night auditing include:
- Basic Accounting
- Certified Guest Service Professional
- Food and alcohol handling certifications, such as ServSafe (if the night auditor is also responsible for managing the hotel’s restaurant during the night shift).
If you have many certifications, you can list them in a separate section. But if you have just one or two certifications, add them to your resume’s education section.
4. Add top night auditor skills to your resume
Night auditors require a unique blend of hard and soft skills. Hard skills are subject matter–related skills learned through training and education, while soft skills are transferable skills related to your personality.
Add these hard skills to your night auditor resume (if you have them) to show employers you’re qualified for their open jobs:
- Accounting skills
- Front desk operations
- Closing/end-of-day procedures
- Report generation
- Billing
- Reservation and vacancy management
- Computer skills
- Data entry, especially using a 10-key
- Data analysis
- Cash and credit settlement
- Quickbooks
- Account reconciliation
- Property management software (e.g., Opera, Cloudbeds, Hotelogix)
You’ll also need good soft skills, like the following, to excel as a night auditor:
- Customer service skills
- Organizational skills
- Time management skills
- Conflict resolution
- Written and verbal communication skills
- Adaptability
- Active listening
- Attention to detail
- Phone skills
- People skills
- Problem-solving skills
- Multitasking
