Everyone involved in the hiring process reads cover letters, including:
- recruiters
- human resources employees
- hiring managers
- supervisors and executives
If possible, greet a contact person by name. But if the job ad doesn’t list a contact person, and you can’t find one by researching the company, address your cover letter to either:
- Dear Hiring Manager,
- Dear [Department Name] Team,
Applicant tracking software (ATS) systems also read cover letters by searching for keywords from the job ad and filtering out applications that don’t include enough keywords.
So tailor your cover letter to the job posting to help your application get past an ATS, impress the hiring team, and land you an interview.
