1. Open with a strong cover letter introduction
Hiring managers only spend a few seconds glancing at each application, so make sure your cover letter stands out. It’s essential to know how to start a cover letter in a way that grabs attention and shows you’re a star applicant. Here are some ways to do that:
Show your enthusiasm and passion for the position by explaining why you’re interested in working for the company or clinic. Look at its website and find out its values and company goals. Including a sentence with your reasoning shows you’re genuinely interested in the company and have done your research.
For example:
Since 1982, the Waking Life Rehabilitation Clinic has received numerous awards and positive testimonials for its exceptional customer service and medical care. I’d love to work for a company that cares so much about its patients while always striving for better.
Highlight your relevant educational background, certifications, and professional experience in the medical industry to let employers know immediately that you have the right qualifications. Use hard numbers when mentioning your experience to make an impact.
For example:
I am a certified Physician Assistant and have a Bachelor’s degree in General Science along with 10+ years of work experience in hospital, rehabilitation, and orthopedic settings.
Mention how you’ll contribute positively to the company. Employers want to know why they should hire you, so make it easy for them to see why. A great way to close your introduction is a sentence mentioning how you hope to use your existing skills to benefit patients and colleagues.

2. Use the correct format when creating a cover letter
When formatting your cover letter, follow these guidelines to make sure your application moves to the next round:
- Cover letter length: Having the correct cover letter length is crucial because it shows you can write concisely yet effectively with the given space. Keep your cover letter at 250–400 words, or between three and four paragraphs. A cover letter should never be over one page long or hiring managers will lose interest.
- Spacing: Leave space in your cover letter between the date, recipient’s address, salutation, body paragraphs, sign-off, signature, and your name. Providing white space throughout your cover letter makes your writing easy to follow.
- Margins: Use cover letter margins between 1” and 1.5”. Adjusting the margins slightly is acceptable. However, avoid any large adjustments that will make your letter look too full or too thin.
- Font style: Use a traditional cover letter font such as Times New Roman, Helvetica, Arial, or Verdana. Most employers use applicant tracking systems (ATS) to scan applications, so an unconventional or hard-to-read font will cause problems.
- Font size: Keep your font size between 10.5 and 12 points so that hiring managers have no issues reading your letter.
- File format: Submit your cover letter in a PDF if you’re sending out a digital copy. PDFs are ATS friendly, compatible with all systems, and don’t allow others to modify your work.
- Naming your file: Make it easy for employers to find your cover letter if they need to refer to it again by using a suitable title for your filename such as Your-Name-Job-Title-Cover-Letter.pdf. Naming your file appropriately also shows your attention to detail.
3. End your cover letter with an effective closing statement
Convince hiring managers right to the end that you’re the right person for the role. When ending your cover letter, include the following information in your closing paragraph:
- Summarize your key points from your cover letter by relating them once more to the company and how you can benefit it.
- A call to action (CTA) shows confidence and initiative. Use a CTA to let the hiring manager know that you’ll appreciate the opportunity for an interview or to discuss your qualifications.
- List your contact details clearly by including your phone number and email address.
- Say thank you to the hiring manager for reading your cover letter and include a professional sign-off, such as “Sincerely,”.
