3 tips for writing your plumbing resume
Whether you’re an apprentice, journeyman, or master plumber, our resume writing tips will help you set yourself apart from the competition.
1. Write a convincing resume summary
Plumbers make a median annual income of $60,090 per year, but to land the most lucrative plumbing jobs you’ll need a resume that sets you apart. Starting your resume with a resume summary is a great way to help you stand out and capture the attention of employers.
Your objective should include your:
- Profession or title
- Years of experience
- Key skills
- Desired role
Here’s a sample plumber resume summary to use as inspiration:
Dedicated and skilled journeyman plumber with 6+ years of experience in residential and commercial plumbing. Proven expertise in installing, repairing, and maintaining plumbing systems to ensure efficient operation. Looking to apply my technical skills and commitment to top-tier customer service in the Journeyman Plumber role at [Company Name].
Be sure to read each job description carefully and be ready to tweak your professional summary according to the employer’s requirements. A personalized statement will get you noticed and make a good first impression.
2. Write your resume to target the job description
Too many job seekers make the mistake of sending the same generic resume to every employer. If you do this, you’ll be more likely to get rejected.
To increase your chances of getting hired, look for keywords in the job description that apply to your past roles and include them in your resume.
Here’s an example of a plumber job description, with possible resume keywords underlined in blue:

And here’s an example of how to use these keywords in descriptions of your previous job responsibilities:
- Installed, maintained, and repaired plumbing fixtures and systems
- Determined the source of plumbing problems and completed repairs
- Assisted with 2-3 service calls per day on average
- Carried out inspections to ensure all work was up to local codes
- Responded to emergencies, made recommendations, and performed required repairs
- Completed proper documentation of work performed, including inspection forms and invoices
Note that this section contains keywords from the job description but also varies the wording somewhat. You should only choose keywords that actually describe your past responsibilities to make sure your resume stays truthful and accurate. Don’t just copy and paste the job description into your resume.
Matching parts of your resume to the language used in the job description increases the likelihood that the employer will see it. This also shows that you understand the employer’s needs and are well-equipped to meet them.
Find a company that aligns with your values and provides learning opportunities. The skilled trades have a bright and potentially lucrative future. Focus on learning and continue to grow. – Joe McClaran, Talent Acquisition Manager at ShoffnerKalthoff MES, Inc.
3. Emphasize your plumbing skills
Plumbing is a hands-on job that requires a specific set of skills and certifications. If you want to land a job, it’s crucial to feature these skills prominently on your resume.
Begin by creating a separate skills section on your resume. Include a combination of general plumbing skills, like pipefitting, welding, and fixture installation, as well as any specialized skills you’ve acquired.
Your resume should only list skills that are relevant to the position you’re applying for. Keep in mind that many plumbing skills are useful for both residential and commercial work.
Here are some example plumbing skills for your resume:
- Pipe installation
- Pipe repair
- Blueprint reading
- PVC
- PEX
- Drain cleaning
- Water heater installation and repair
- Gas line installation
- Backflow prevention
- Water conservation techniques
- Knowledge of environmentally-friendly plumbing practices
- Pipe corrosion assessment
- Soldering
- Brazing
- Pressure testing
- Appliance hookup
- Hydronic systems
- Excavation
- Septic system maintenance
- Water treatment systems
- Thermal expansion
- Code compliance
- Technical proficiency
