Tips for writing a work from home resume

Follow these tips to highlight the skills, experience, and accomplishments that show you’re well-equipped to succeed in a remote role.

Mention any remote or asynchronous work experience

If you have previous remote work experience, feature it prominently on your resume to show employers that you’re already familiar with the demands of working from home.

Highlight accomplishments that demonstrate your ability to stay productive, communicate clearly, manage your time, and collaborate without being in the same physical location as your colleagues.

Even if you haven’t held a fully remote position, look for opportunities to highlight asynchronous work experience.

Working with teammates, clients, or stakeholders across different locations or time zones can demonstrate that you’re comfortable communicating through email, project management platforms, shared documents, and other tools without relying on constant meetings or real-time communication.

Highlight remote-friendly skills

Highlight skills that demonstrate you can stay productive, communicate effectively, and collaborate with others remotely, like communication, time management, organization, self-motivation, collaboration, and adaptability.

You should also list the remote collaboration tools you’re familiar with, particularly if they’re mentioned in the job description.

Depending on your experience, these might include Slack, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Workspace, Asana, Trello, or other communication and project management platforms. Focus on tools you’ve actually used rather than adding a long list of software simply to include keywords.

Show your ability to work independently

Remote employers need to know that you can stay productive without constant supervision. Use your work experience section to show how you’ve managed projects, met deadlines, made decisions, and solved problems independently. Whenever possible, focus on specific results rather than simply stating that you’re self-motivated or a strong independent worker.

For example, instead of writing “Worked independently on multiple projects,” quantify your achievements to show what you accomplished: “Managed five client projects simultaneously, meeting all deadlines with minimal supervision.” This gives employers concrete evidence that you can be trusted to get work done in a remote environment.

It can be challenging to find quality work from home jobs. Find better opportunities with our list of the best job boards for remote work.
