How to write your operating room nurse resume

Landing an operating room nurse job takes more than just listing credentials. It’s about presenting your experience in a way that matches what hospitals are looking for.

The following three tips will help you customize your resume, emphasize the right experience, and list your credentials correctly so you can stand out in the hiring process:

1. Customize your resume for your specialty

Always tailor your resume to the surgical nursing role. Check the job posting’s duties and qualifications, then highlight how your background fits those needs.

If the posting asks for scrub and circulating skills, show both.

Likewise, adjust your resume for your area of medicine. For example, RNFAs in neurosurgery need different technical skills than those in oncology.

Notice how these specialties differ in their work experience, skills, and certifications:

Scrub nurse

Work experience: Efficiently and thoroughly sterilize operating room and tools, respond quickly to surgeon needs, perform risk assessment, and implement life-saving measures during complications
Skills: Surgical instrument and sponge counts, adaptability, teamwork skills
Certification: Certified Perioperative Nurse (CNOR)

Circulating nurse

Work experience: Prepared and positioned patients, ensured OR readiness, documented intraoperative activities, and maintained compliance with safety protocols
Skills: Patient positioning, charting, OR safety protocols, communication, multitasking
Certification: Certified Perioperative Nurse (CNOR)

RN First Assistant (RNFA)

Work experience: Assisted surgeons directly by providing exposure, suturing incisions, and maintaining hemostasis. Reduced operative time by 10% through anticipating procedural needs
Skills: Suturing, hemostasis, advanced surgical assistance, leadership in the OR
Certifications: RNFA credential, Certified Perioperative Nurse (CNOR)

PACU nurse

Work experience: Comforted post-op patients and family members, explained post-op procedures, answered questions, and monitored vital signs and side effects
Skills: Active listening, interpersonal skills, vital signs, documentation
Certification: Certified Post-Anesthesia Nurse (CPAN)

2. Emphasize your OR nurse work experience and certifications

Perioperative nursing is an advanced field, with some job postings excluding recent graduates completely. As a result, your experience and credentials count more than your education, so place them higher on your resume and give them more space.

If you lack the preferred work experience, add more detail in your education section, such as:

  • GPA
  • Relevant coursework
  • Rotations, internship placements, and other hands-on experiences
  • Academic accomplishments

You can also add sections for:

  • Language skills
  • Accomplishments and awards
  • Volunteer work

Keep your resume focused and concise. Hiring managers typically prefer a one-page format, so prioritize your most relevant operating room experience and certifications.

3. Correctly list your OR nursing credentials and licenses

You can list your accreditations in your certifications section or your skills section.

In your certifications section

Include the:

  • Name and abbreviation of the certification
  • Granting body or state
  • Issue date
  • Expiration date
  • Credential ID number
Example:

Certified Perioperative Nurse (CNOR)
Competency and Credentialing Institute (CCI)
Issued: Jan 20XX | Expires: Jan 20XX
Credential ID: 00000000

In your skills section

If listed under skills, include the certification name, certifying body, and license number. This lets hiring managers verify your qualifications in databases.
