How to write a realtor resume
Don’t struggle with your real estate resume. Here’s an in-depth guide (with examples) to show you how to write a good realtor resume.
1. Highlight your realtor certifications prominently
Your state or city might mandate certain realtor certifications and licenses to practice your profession, so check with them on the ones you need.
And because you can’t assume employers will know you have them, add them to a certifications section on your resume.
For example, this real estate agent who works in Los Angeles has listed the certifications and licenses they’re required to have:
CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, & MEMBERSHIPS
- California Real Estate Salesperson License, Issued 20XX
- Real Estate Practice Course (45 hours), Completed 20XX
- Real Estate Principles Course (45 hours), Completed 20XX
- Elective Course in Real Estate Finance (45 hours), Completed 20XX
- Member, National Association of Realtors (NAR)
- Member, California Association of Realtors (CAR)
- Member, Greater Los Angeles Association of Realtors (GLAAR)
2. Quantify your real estate successes
You’ll need to quantify your previous achievements so that hiring managers can see you’re effective at selling or leasing out properties.
To give you an idea of what this looks like on a resume, here are five examples of quantified resume bullet points with dollar amounts:
Well-quantified real estate resume
- Negotiated and closed over $2.5 mil. in residential real estate transactions in 20XX
- Consistently exceeded annual sales targets by an average of 15%
- Successfully marketed and sold a luxury property for $1.8 mil., achieving the highest sale price in the neighborhood in the past 5 years
- Generated over $120,000 in revenue through property management services for a portfolio of 10 rental units
- Secured a $500,000 investment property for a client, resulting in a projected 15% annual return on investment
3. Provide an insight into your skills
As a real estate agent, you’ll need a good mix of hard and soft skills.
Hard skills are ones you learn that are related to legal requirements, software, or equipment that you’ll need to use on a daily basis to do your job. Here are 10 common hard skills that real estate agents need:
- Market knowledge
- Sales and negotiation
- Financial analysis
- Contract knowledge
- Property valuation
- Marketing and advertising
- CRM software (e.g., Propertybase, Follow Up Boss)
- MLS platforms (e.g., your local MLS)
- Digital marketing tools (e.g., social media, email marketing software)
- Virtual tour software (e.g., Matterport, Zillow 3D Home)
Meanwhile, soft skills are about how you relate to other people and stay on top of your workload.
These skills are equally vital because you’re responsible for connecting to clients to close deals.
It’s best not to list them in your skills section but you can show that you have them by working examples of times you’ve used them into your work history entries
Here are five soft skills you’ll need to hone:
- Communication: Building rapport, active listening, and empathy are all crucial for understanding client needs and ensuring a smooth transaction.
- Problem–solving: Real estate transactions can be challenging. Agents with strong problem-solving skills can navigate obstacles and find creative solutions to them.
- Adaptability: The market constantly evolves: Agents who are adaptable can learn new skills, embrace technology, and thrive in a dynamic environment.
- Negotiation: Skilled negotiators can secure the best possible deal for their clients, whether it’s on price, terms, or repairs.
- Time management: Real estate agents juggle multiple clients, listings, and deadlines. Effective time management ensures everything gets done efficiently.
4. Tie your realtor resume together with a compelling summary
Writing a good realtor resume summary is essential because it’ll be the first thing hiring managers read, so you want it to compel them to keep reading.
Sum up your proudest achievements, real estate skills, and certifications to make hiring managers interested in your resume.
Here are three examples of real estate resume summaries to give you ideas for your own:
