How to write a housekeeping resume with no experience

A good housekeeper is efficient, able to follow instructions and possesses excellent attention to detail. While having a degree in tourism, travel, hospitality or hotel management can be useful, it’s not necessary to become a professional housekeeper. Many learn through on-the-job training and apprenticeships.

If you lack previous housekeeping experience, you’ll need to use examples from your other professional experiences or personal life to prove that you have the knowledge and skills it takes to fulfill housekeeping duties.

Follow these three writing tips to write a housekeeping resume with no experience:

1. Lead with your education and certifications

For entry-level candidates, the resume education section usually carries the most weight. If you’re a recent high school or college graduate with little to no work experience, place your education section above your professional experience section.

Outside of formal education, certifications are where you gain ground. Several are designed for people entering the field and take a few hours to complete online:

  • ServSafe Food Handler – Issued by the National Restaurant Association. Widely held by café and restaurant workers, and it proves you’ve been trained in sanitation standards.
  • Bloodborne Pathogens – Short online training covering safe handling of biohazards, which housekeepers encounter in guest rooms and laundry.
  • OSHA 10-Hour General Industry – Covers workplace safety, chemical hazards, and personal protective equipment.
  • Certified Guestroom Attendant (CGA) – Offered by the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute (AHLEI) and built specifically for line-level housekeeping staff.

The US Department of Labor also maintains a database of certifications for housekeepers. The best fit for you may be state-dependent, so make sure to research your options.

Executive-level credentials like CHHE and CESE exist too, but they’re aimed at housekeeping supervisors and directors. Save those for later in your career.

If you’ve earned more than one certification, list them in a separate certifications section. With just one, place it in your education section.

List each certification with:

  • Name of the certification
  • Name of the organization that issued it
  • Date earned

Here’s an example of how to place certifications in the education section of your resume:

EDUCATION

Certified Guest Room Attendant
American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute
20XX

High School Diploma
Lincoln High School, Portland, OR
20XX

2. Quantify your relevant experience

Previous housekeeping experience is the fastest way into the industry, but it’s not the only way. Put numbers on the relevant experience you already have and employers can picture the work you’ve done.

An impactful work experience section includes numerical values and lays out your range of skills and experience.

For a housekeeping resume with no experience, emphasize professionalism, and keep the focus on efficiency, safety, and cleanliness. Think about times you’ve demonstrated these qualities, then write them up with a number attached.

Cleaning duties from a café or restaurant job translate directly. Attach a number and the experience does more work:

Sanitized 12 tables and 3 service stations at every close, maintaining health-code standards across 5 shifts per week

Cleaning duties also show up in more places than paid jobs. Any of these count:

  • Classroom cleanup rotations, lab cleardown, or shop and art room maintenance
  • Dorm resident advisor duties or shared-house chore schedules
  • Sports team equipment and locker room upkeep
  • Church, temple, or community center volunteering
  • Caring for a family home, including laundry, deep cleaning, and supply runs

Write each one the way you’d write a job: what you cleaned, how often, and at what scale. Here’s an example built from school duties:

Managed monthly classroom cleaning rotation for a class of 30, sanitizing shared surfaces and restocking supplies before each session

And here’s one from a café job, where cleaning is part of nearly every shift:

Cleaned and sanitized food prep areas and coffee machines using diluted commercial cleaning solutions per manufacturer instructions

Any experience, paid or not, can be relevant with the right framing.

3. Don’t be afraid to list soft skills

While hard skills are important, don’t discount your soft skills, especially for a resume with no experience. In fact, employers often look to demonstrated soft skills to differentiate a candidate from the pack.

You’ll work alone for most of a shift. Nobody watches you clean each room. Employers hire people who show up on time, follow a checklist without supervision, and work through a room list at a steady pace. Reliability, organization, and independence carry real weight here.

Guest interaction matters too. You’ll field requests in hallways, handle complaints in person, and work around guests who are still in their rooms.

These are some of the soft skills employers look for in housekeepers:

  • Reliability and punctuality
  • Working independently
  • Attention to detail
  • Time management
  • Organizational skills
  • Problem solving
  • Verbal communication skills
  • Listening skills
  • Flexibility
  • Patience
  • Multitasking

It’s stronger to attach them to something you’ve actually done rather than listing them alone. Here’s an example:

Coordinated with a 10-person team to complete assigned zones within scheduled shift windows, recognized by the program director for consistent attendance

In a service-heavy entry-level role, you can list soft skills directly in your skills section. Doing so shows employers you understand that the job takes more than cleaning ability.

Soft skills backed by an example tell an employer you can handle the parts of the job that a checklist doesn’t cover.
