How to Write a SQL Developer Resume

SQL developers make excellent salaries in the US, so many people want to work as one.

Write a great resume and you’ll be a lot closer to finding your own SQL development position.

Here are five tips to help you write a job-winning SQL development resume:

1. Highlight your SQL developer resume skills

SQL developer positions are highly specialized, so the first thing hiring managers will want to know is whether you have the right technical skills for the job.

Because SQL developer responsibilities are often specific to the job—data modeling versus programming, for example—no two employers are going to be looking for the same kind of hire.

Still, the following technical skills are essential for most SQL developer jobs:

  • MySQL
  • SQL Server
  • Postgres Sequel
  • Power BI
  • Tableau
  • Excel
  • General computer skills

Other technical skills might not be required for SQL devs but are still highly desirable. Computer languages such as Python, Java, and C, for example, will likely increase your appeal to potential employers as programming often falls under the range of tasks that SQL developers are responsible for.

2. Emphasize your interpersonal skills

Writing code might seem like a one-person job, but as an SQL developer, you’ll also have to work closely with other members of your team to ensure data is well organized and accurate. It’s no surprise, then, that interpersonal skills are among the most important soft skills you can include on your SQL developer resume.

Demonstrate your interpersonal skills by highlighting how they’ve benefited your previous employers.

Here are a couple examples of how to do this well:

Experience bullets highlighting interpersonal skills

  • Gather requirements from business analysts, develop physical data models using Erwin, and create DDL scripts to design database schema and database objects
  • Lead the development of 12 database projects for one of the company’s largest clients with on-time delivery and 13% under budget completion

Bullet points like these show that you’re a team player with proven collaborative experience, and will be a great addition to any company.

3. Back up your achievements with hard numbers

As an SQL developer, many of your on-the-job achievements are measured in data. So it’s important that you make your work experience section count by demonstrating your achievements with that data.

For each position in your work experience section, include three to five bullet points that demonstrate what you achieved in your previous position, backed up with hard numbers.

Here are a couple of examples demonstrating how to include data in your  SQL developer resume:

Experience bullets highlighting how to use hard numbers

  • Perform database defragmentation and optimize SQL queries, improving database performance and loading speed by 70%
  • Lead the development of 12 database projects for one of the company’s largest clients with on-time delivery and 13% under budget completion

4. Include SQL-related action words in your resume

Whether your specialty is modeling or programming, your skills as an SQL developer are highly specialized. With heaps of resumes to skim through, hiring managers are looking for candidates with experience that matches their job description.

While most applications might only get 6 seconds of their attention, you can make hiring managers stop on your application by using industry-related resume action words.

Here are a few action verbs that frequently appear on SQL developer job postings:

  • analyze
  • code
  • configure
  • debug
  • design
  • develop
  • implement
  • investigate
  • maintain
  • optimize
  • troubleshoot

In addition to tailoring your professional profile to the employer’s needs, this engaging, active language helps highlight your achievements and technical skills.
