How to write a resume for beginners or a first job
Writing a resume for the first time is simple when you follow these four tips:
1. Write an eye-catching resume objective
A resume objective focuses on your skills, education, and goals and will help you catch the attention of employers.
Here’s an example of a resume objective that conveys the candidate’s passion and relevant skills:
Recent Visual Communication Design graduate with over 1 year of internship and volunteer experience in graphic design. Proficient in using Adobe Creative Suite to create captivating visual content. Eager to leverage my creative abilities and hands-on experience to contribute innovative design solutions as a graphic designer at Socialfly.
2. Highlight your volunteer or internship experience
If you’re a beginner, list any volunteer, internship, or other experience you have alongside any professional experience you have.
If you have no formal work experience, rename the work experience section to “relevant experience.”
In this section, emphasize your best selling points: non-work related experience that’s taught you skills you’ll need to succeed in your chosen field. Usually, this experience will be internships or volunteer positions, but it can also be leadership roles in school clubs or student government.
3. List your accomplishments in bullet points
In your work experience or relevant experience section, use bullet points to show what you did and the skills you used.
Bullet points make your resume easier to skim and help hiring managers understand what you achieved.
Emphasize achievements, not tasks, using numbers when possible.
Here’s a helpful tool that can help you generate bullet points for any role:

4. Emphasize your relevant skills
In the skills section of your resume, list the skills mentioned in the job description.
Also, you can include any Transferable skills in your bullet points and resume summary. These are skills you’ve gained in school or other jobs that will be useful in most professional settings. Here are some examples:
- Communication skills
- Problem solving
- Computer skills
- Research skills
- Time management
- Teamwork
- Analytical skills
- Writing
- Multitasking
- Public speaking
- Data analysis
- Attention to detail
Look through the job ad and check if any of these skills appear in the job description. If they do, add them to your beginner resume to show hiring managers that although you lack work experience, you’re a good fit for the role.
And don’t forget: employers expect a cover letter too, even for entry-level roles, so learn how to write a cover letter.
