How to write a social media marketing resume
Social media marketing is an essential part of building a strong brand in 2024. It’s an effective, economical way for businesses to reach their target audience, gain a better understanding of their customer base, and build brand loyalty.
As a social media marketer, you need to convince employers that you have the skills, experience and personal qualities necessary to help them reach their engagement and sales goals. Shanté Gorman, Founder and CEO at SugarPunch Marketing, says:
A good marketer understands sales psychology, but a great marketer has strong emotional intelligence and the ability to empathize with their target audience. They need to be able to tell impactful stories, study current culture (much like a sociologist), and understand how these elements intersect to market a brand successfully. — Shanté Gorman
A well-written social media marketing resume — with the right resume format — will do just that. Create your own following these three top tips:
1. Showcase relevant social media skills on your resume
While a majority of Americans today have run at least one social media account, this doesn’t make them qualified to be a social media marketer. A good social media marketer is a strong communicator, stays informed about changing trends, and is proficient in editing software and analytics tools.
To show prospective employers that you have what it takes to help craft the company’s brand image, you should include a mix of social media-related hard and soft skills on your resume. Doing so will demonstrate that you have the industry-specific know-how and the personality you need to succeed as a social media marketer.
Here are the top 10 hard marketing skills to showcase on a social media marketing resume:
Hard skills
- Copywriting
- Video editing (Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, Pinncale Studio)
- Photo editing (Adobe Photoshop, Skylum Luminar AI, Canva)
- Data analytics tools (Google Analytics, BuzzSumo, Sprout Social)
- Graphic design skills
- Photography
- Project management
- Search engine optimization (SEO)
- Report writing
- Formal presentations
It’s important not to overlook the importance of soft skills for marketers, according to Gorman:
Communication and empathy have been incredibly valuable [in my career]. Marketing is about connecting with people, and understanding your audience on a human level helps create campaigns that resonate. Active listening skills have been crucial when collaborating with teams and clients. Asking questions and reiterating answers can make a huge difference to ensure everyone is on the same page. — Shanté Gorman
Here’s a list of 10 more soft skills to list on your resume:
Soft skills
- Collaboration
- Analysis
- Organization
- Initiative
- Brainstorming
- Innovation
- Time-management
- Professionalism
- Networking
- Goal setting

While the skills section of your resume is made to show off your talent, it’s not the only place you should be highlighting your skills. Your work experience section is also a great place to include more of your skills.
Here’s a good example of how to list social media skills in the work experience section of your resume:
“Analyze and update Kosas digital marketing strategy in collaboration with the Marketing Manager, resulting in a 30% increase in traffic to the company website over a 6-month period”
This example is effective because it tells the employer what tangible results the candidate has achieved in the past indicating what benefit they can bring to the company in the future.
2. Tailor your resume to each job posting
Hiring managers look through dozens of social media marketing applications regularly, and they know a generic resume when they see one. Tailoring your resume to every job you apply for can help grab a hiring manager’s attention because it shows a greater level of care and allows you to more closely target each position.
To effectively target a specific job, scan the job posting for keywords that relate to the skills and responsibilities required in the role. The job posting lists exactly what experience and qualifications employers are looking for in a social media marketer, so make sure that your resume includes these.
Here are a few examples of sentences that you might see in a job posting, with relevant keywords highlighted:
- “The ideal candidate is flexible and comfortable working from home”
- “Looking for someone with strong interpersonal skills and a demonstrated record as a self-starter”
- “Job duties include communicating with customers and handling incoming inquiries”
- “Someone with experience working in a fast-paced environment is preferred”
Below is one example of how to incorporate keywords into your resume:
“Communicated daily with customers and followers via Biossance’s social media channels to achieve a goal of 20% increase in engagement”
Remember to quantify your accomplishments to lend further credibility to your resume.
3. Highlight relevant internships
If you’re a recent graduate or you have limited work experience, putting internships on your resume can help convince hiring managers that you have the social media experience required for a job in social media marketing.
Listing internship experience is not that different from listing other work experience on your resume. You should include:
- The name of the company you interned at
- The title you held (for example, “social media intern”)
- Start date and end date of your internship
- Responsibilities and achievements
If you’re only planning on including one internship, list it in the work experience section. If you have multiple internships to include, consider putting them in a separate section.
Here’s an example of how to put an internship on a resume:
