How to write an assistant principal resume

Whether you’re an assistant principal looking to change schools or a teacher aiming to transition into an administrative leadership role, you need to show employers you’re ready to take on the challenges that come with the job.

Use these three tips to write an assistant principal resume that shows how you’ll be able to contribute to your new school.

1. Tailor your assistant principal resume to your target school

There are many things to take into account when tailoring your resume for your target school, from the student body to community culture.

Learning how to write a resume that matches the needs of the school you want to work at requires research. Look at your preferred school’s vision and mission statements to understand which professional characteristics you should highlight throughout your resume.

Here’s an example of an elementary school’s mission statement:

MISSION STATEMENT

Our mission is to provide a safe and supportive environment in order to impact the lives of every student, every day by providing an education that inspires growth and promotes success.

And here’s how one candidate used keywords from the mission statement to describe their accomplishments and show they’re a good fit for the school:

  • Established a safe learning environment to promote student education and boost their ability to assimilate as a result of emotional, social and physical comfort
  • Focused primarily on teacher development and created a culture that built positive student-teacher relationships

By using keywords from the mission or vision statement, you demonstrate that you understand the school’s needs and culture.

Another way to prove that you’re an ideal candidate is to use keywords in your resume that are taken from the job description.

Here’s an example of a job description that highlights supervision and communication skills:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • The Assistant Principal shall have knowledge of the requirements for providing proper care and supervision to the children.
  • The Assistant Principal shall exhibit clear and concise communication skills and public relations skills; thereby developing cooperative, positive relationships with the students, parents, and staff.

The candidate in the following example took relevant keywords found in the job description and included them in their resume’s skills section to address the school’s requirements for an assistant principal:

SKILLS
  • Process improvement
  • Operational excellence
  • Employee and student supervision
  • Effective communication
  • Problem-solving
  • Decision making
  • Leadership

2. Emphasize your leadership skills

Assistant principals must be effective communicators and capable of managing relationships with teachers, faculty, parents, students, and union representatives. Your leadership skills and communication skills are critical soft skills you should draw attention to throughout your resume, and most importantly in your work experience section.

If you’re a current assistant principal looking to change schools, emphasize how your efforts have measurably improved your current workplace, like in this example:

  • Helped the school earn an additional $200,000 in district funding
  • Led an online well-being program to support over 300 students during the pandemic

This candidate showcased many additional competencies on top of leadership like communication, interpersonal skills, empathy, and technical knowledge.

If you’re currently an experienced teacher interested in transitioning to an assistant principal position, focus on your transferable skills in addition to your accomplishments in the classroom.

Here’s a good example of how to highlight your relevant transferable skills as an educational professional:

  • Developed inclusive strategies to increase student engagement by implementing state-of-the-art online learning programs
  • Solidified parent and student involvement in school-led community events

This candidate highlights essential competencies like a sense of initiative and creative thinking skills to attain school goals.

By taking on leadership roles as a teacher, you prepare for a smooth transition into an administrator role.

3. Show you’re on top of the latest education trends

Demonstrating your proficiency in new technologies in your resume’s skills section or throughout your work experience section like this candidate did will help you stand out from other job applicants:

  • Streamlined class administration with Class for Zoom
  • Improved class learning pace and engagement by 40% by implementing Brightspace to allow students greater access to learning resources adapted to their level
  • Recently acquired Fast ForWord to support struggling readers make significant progress in a short amount of time
