Day in the life of a medical assistant

Curious about what the day-to-day responsibilities of a medical assistant look like? YouTuber and medical assistant Rachel Vinn explains it in this video:

How to write a medical assistant resume

Because the medical assistant occupation is accessible with only a vocational school credential, it’s a competitive field to get into.

Here are four tips for writing a medical assistant resume that helps you stand out from the competition:

1. Showcase your medical assistant certifications and education

A formal college education isn’t required to be a medical assistant. However, clinics and hospitals prefer to hire medical assistants with certifications and technical training relevant to the type of work they’ll be doing, so it’s important to feature these certifications on your resume.

You can have two separate sections for your education and certifications, like this:

CERTIFICATIONS

  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) — American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), 20XX
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification — American Heart Association, 20XX
  • Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) — National Healthcareer Association (NHA), 20XX

EDUCATION
Associate of Applied Science in Health Sciences
Northwestern Community College, Winsted, CT
May 20XX

Or, you could write a combined education and certifications section, like this:

EDUCATION & CERTIFICATIONS

  • Certified Phlebotomy Technician (NCPT) — National Phlebotomy Association, August 20XX
  • Certified Medical Assistant — American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), May 20XX
  • Medical Assistant Diploma — American Career College, Orange County, CA, June 20XX

2. Incorporate skills and qualifications from the job description

Read the job description closely for skills and key qualifications to highlight on your resume.

You can list these in the skills section of your resume, or show how you applied them in your work experience bullet points, like this:

  • Performed vital sign measurements, including blood pressure, pulse, and temperature, maintaining accurate patient records

Here the top medical assistant skills and qualifications we pulled from real job listings:

3. Write a strong resume summary

The purpose of a resume summary is to briefly explain the main reasons why you’re the ideal candidate for the role you’re applying for and leave the hiring manager wanting to read your full resume.

Use your resume summary to communicate your:

  • best certification or qualification
  • experience in the field
  • personal qualities that make you a great medical assistant

Here are some examples:

Lead medical assistant resume

Experienced lead medical assistant with 8+ years of hands-on expertise in overseeing clinical operations, supervising staff, and ensuring exceptional patient care. Proficient in EMR systems, medical coding, and streamlining office procedures for maximum efficiency. Adept at training and mentoring junior staff while maintaining compliance with regulations. Committed to fostering a positive team environment and delivering high-quality healthcare services.

Medical assistant student resume

Resourceful medical assistant student with a proven ability to thrive in fast-paced healthcare environments. Skilled in conducting intake interviews, updating electronic medical records (EMRs), and maintaining a clean and organized workspace. Adept at multitasking, problem-solving, and delivering exceptional customer service. Focused on developing proficiency in clinical and administrative duties to provide comprehensive patient care.

Medical assistant externship resume

Enthusiastic medical assistant student eager to gain practical experience through an externship in a healthcare setting. Equipped with a solid foundation in medical terminology, anatomy, and clinical procedures from comprehensive coursework. Skilled in multitasking, following protocols, and delivering compassionate patient care. Committed to applying classroom knowledge and continuously developing essential abilities.

If you lack experience you could write a resume objective for a medical assistant instead.

4. Present your professional experience with hard numbers

When you write your work experience section, focus on displaying the core competencies needed for the role, while also highlighting specific achievements and backing them up with data where possible. Consider these two versions of a medical assistant resume work experience bullet point:

Clear

Supported family doctor with conducting exams for more than 2,000 patients from over 600 families

Vague

Assisted doctors with conducting patient examinations

The first option is what you should aim for because it includes data that lets your potential employer know the kind of environment you have experience in, as well as the workload you can handle if they hire you as their next medical assistant.

The second option is poorly written because it just states a job responsibility. Any applicant for a medical assistant role can make the same statement, so writing like that won’t help you stand out.

Here are some other examples of experience you could quantify as a medical assistant:

  • Patients seen per day
  • Average patient wait time
  • Number of procedures conducted daily
  • Accuracy rate in maintaining records
  • Number of electronic health records (EHR) managed
  • Percentage compliance with HIPAA regulations
  • Time taken to respond to patient inquiries or requests
