How to write a videographer resume

These five tips show you how to make your videographer resume a scene-stealer.

1. Highlight your skills

From managing clients to shooting the video, videographers need a range of skills to be successful throughout the production process.

Specifically, hiring managers look for videographers with strong technical skills to create eye-catching content. Videographers should also have great time management and collaboration skills.

Use your resume’s skills section to highlight your top three to five videographer-related skills. Every videographer job is different, and employers will skim your skills section for key information to decide if you’re a good fit.

Consider listing some of these top videographer resume skills on your resume to improve your chances of getting an interview (just make sure you have them).

  • Shooting
  • Action videography
  • Outdoor/ nature videography
  • News videography
  • Light design
  • Cinematography
  • Script writing
  • Photography
  • Video editing
  • Camera operation
  • Editing software (Adobe After Effects, Adobe Premiere Pro)
  • Client communication
  • Crew instruction
  • Attention to detail
  • Time management
  • Studio shooting
  • On-location shooting

2. Write out a full projects section

Particularly if you lack formal experience as a videographer, writing a solid projects section helps you prove to employers you have the tools to succeed. School projects, freelance work, and large-scale projects can be included here in more detail than in your experience section.

Here are the five elements to include when listing a project on your resume:

  • Name of project
  • Genre of video (Wedding, news, sports, nature, studio)
  • Runtime
  • Role in the project (associate editor, lead camera operator, etc.)
  • Date of project

Make sure to list your projects in chronological order, starting with the most recent one.  And if you’ve only been involved in one big project, there’s no need to create an entire projects section.

3. Focus on accomplishments in your bullet points

Instead of listing your responsibilities, you should give employers evidence of your accomplishments in your resume bullet points.

Your achievements show hiring managers the value you can bring to their organization, so focus on writing bullet points that showcase how you’ve exceeded expectations in your previous videographer roles.

An effective resume format will help you showcase your achievements, along with resume bullet points that start with action verbs. Action verbs draw the eye and give hiring managers a positive impression because you seem like a proactive employee.

To give you an idea of what effective videographer bullet points look like, YC Chao, Resume Genius’s videographer, has shared examples from her own top-notch resume (action verbs in bold):

Videographer | 7 August 20XX–Present
Resume Genius | Taipei, Taiwan

  • Produced 50+ long-form YouTube videos from start to finish
  • Create content for SEO purposes, which resulted in an approx. 60% click gain
  • Grew YouTube channel from 100 to 5,000+ subscribers, with the highest viewed video garnering 88K+ views
  • Optimize video content to improve retention rate and CTR
  • Collaborate across cross-functional teams for researching, script writing, filming, and editing

If your resume is full, you can include more bullet points on your LinkedIn profile. YC’s profile is a great example of how to use LinkedIn to provide more of an insight into your successes.

4. Tailor your videographer resume to the job post

Different genres of videos call for different technical skills. Tailor your resume to the specific job you want by directly addressing those required skills and proving you have them.

If the job is to film athletic matches, elaborate on your experience with equipment that captures fast movement. If the job is primarily on-set work, discuss your lighting and set-design skills.

Tailoring your resume to the job not only shows the employer you put in the effort to match to read their post carefully, but it also shows you’re a great match for the job.
