How to write a job-winning EMT resume

Writing an EMT resume doesn’t need to be difficult. If you’ve referred to the above resume samples and still have questions about formatting your resume, check out the tips below:

1. Emphasize your certifications

Prominently displaying your certifications on your resume is essential for showing employers that you’re fully trained.

Since they’re so important to your application, create a separate certifications section and then list all your unexpired certifications there. Doing so will make it easy for hiring managers to quickly find them.

Here’s an example of a certifications section for an EMT employed by the New York City Fire Department:

Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY)
  • New York State Department of Health Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
  • FDNY EMT Certification
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers (Optional)
  • Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) (Optional)

2. Use numbers to showcase your achievements

Adding numbers to your EMT resume is the most effective way to show what you’re capable of, so quantify your resume achievements to highlight your abilities to hiring managers.

Here’s an example of a quantified EMT resume experience section:

Good bullet points for an EMT resume

  • Responded to over 500 emergency calls, providing critical pre-hospital care for patients with diverse medical needs
  • Successfully administered CPR and AED to 15 patients, resulting in a 60% resuscitation rate
  • Stabilized and transported 20+ trauma patients with severe injuries, ensuring their timely arrival at the hospital for further care
  • Assisted in the delivery of 3 babies in emergency situations, providing immediate care for both mother and newborn
  • Managed and prioritized multiple simultaneous emergency calls, ensuring efficient and effective response times
  • Maintained a 98% success rate in accurately assessing patient conditions and implementing appropriate treatment protocols
  • Collaborated effectively with paramedics, firefighters, and police officers to ensure seamless coordination during emergency responses

3. Highlight the core skills EMTs need to succeed on the job

As an EMT, you’ll need several hard and soft skills. Hard skills are the abilities you learn when training to become an EMT, and are primarily life saving techniques and the tools and equipment you use while working.

Meanwhile, soft skills relate to how you interact with other people. You’ll need them to set patients at ease and work effectively with other health care workers.

10 hard skills for an EMT resume

  1. Patient assessment
  2. CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation)
  3. AED (automated external defibrillator)
  4. Bag-valve mask ventilation
  5. Oxygen administration
  6. Splinting and bandaging
  7. Spinal immobilization
  8. Medication administration
  9. ECG (electrocardiogram) interpretation
  10. Communication and teamwork

5 important EMT soft skills

  • Bedside manner
  • Empathy
  • Calmness under pressure
  • Decision-making
  • Adaptability

Prove you have soft skills in your work experience section. For example, you can illustrate your communication skills and leadership by mentioning how you trained junior EMTs.

4. Write a resume summary that makes it clear why you’re the best candidate

A resume summary lists a your top job-related skills and achievements, while also quickly indicating how much relevant work experience you have.

To make writing your resume summary easier, we’ve prepared this template you can copy, paste, and customize:
