How to write a student athlete resume that gets attention

As well as general advice on writing a resume, we’ve put together four tips specifically designed to help you write your student athlete resume:

1. Show your dedication by adding your training routine to your summary

Talking about your training routine in your resume summary shows your commitment to your sport, and proves that you’re disciplined and hardworking.

Add details about your training to highlight your work ethic, time management, and determination. These qualities are important whether you’re trying out for a new team, or applying for a job.

Example resume summary

Driven and disciplined student athlete with a proven track record of maintaining a rigorous training schedule to exceed performance goals. Recognized for outstanding dedication, resilience, and ability to balance demanding commitments, making me an asset for the [Sports/Job Position] role requiring perseverance and strong work ethic.

2. Include athletic awards, titles, and achievements in your education section

Listing your athletic awards and achievements in your resume’s education section shows you can reach high goals and stand out. It proves you don’t just take part: you succeed.

Mention your awards, championship titles, and personal records to show that you have drive and determination, which are important to both employers and coaches.

Example education section

  • High School Diploma, River Valley High School, Graduated: June 20XX
  • Athletic Honors: Rhode Island State Champion (Cross Country, 20XX), West Los Angeles High School Record Holder (5K Run)

3. Quantify athletic achievements in your bullet points

Employers like to see progress they can measure. Numbers show you can set goals, meet them, and keep improving.

Adding numbers that highlight your athletic progress in bullet points on your resume shows you’re focused on self-improvement and working hard.

Example bullet point

  • Increased free-throw shooting accuracy by 18% over one season through targeted daily practice sessions

4. Highlight academic awards to show commitment beyond the field

Employers and coaches are looking for people who do well both in sports and school.

Adding academic awards to your resume shows you’re serious about learning as well as athletics. This proves you can balance sports and school, which shows a strong ability to manage multiple responsibilities at once.

Example awards section

  • National Speech & Debate Association Academic All-American Award, 20XX
  • First Place, Alabama Foreign Language Poetry Recitation Competition, 20XX
  • Excellence in Linguistics Award, UCLA Department of Communications, 20XX
