  • Tailored resume: Tailoring your resume means making sure employers know you wrote your resume specifically for them. A simple way to do this is to mention the company’s name in your resume summary like this candidate did.

How to write a custodian resume

Here are four tips on writing a good custodian resume.

1. Write a strong resume summary

A resume summary should be 3–5 sentences long and sum up your experience, special skills, and years of experience.

Because it’s the introduction to your resume, it should make hiring managers want to read the rest of it, so make every word count.

Here are three resume summaries that’ll make hiring managers want to learn more about the candidate who wrote them:

Entry-level custodian resume

Motivated and reliable individual seeking an entry-level custodian position. Eager to learn and apply skills to maintain a clean and safe environment. Possess a strong work ethic and attention to detail.

Experienced custodian resume

Experienced custodian with 3 years of experience in maintaining cleanliness and order in various settings. Proven ability to follow cleaning protocols, operate equipment, and work independently or as part of a team.

Head custodian resume

Results-oriented head custodian with 6 years of experience leading and motivating custodial teams. Expertise in scheduling, training, and inventory management. Committed to upholding high standards of cleanliness and safety.

2. Add custodian hard skills

As a custodian, you’ll need to be familiar with the cleaning techniques and tools you’ll be expected to use on the job.

The best strategy is to check the job ad and see what hard skills the employer is looking for. And then, if you have those skills, add them to your resume’s skills section.

If you’re still unsure what hard skills to add, here’s a list of 12 common hard skills for custodians:

  1. Cleaning and sanitation procedures
  2. Floor care (stripping, waxing, buffing)
  3. Carpet cleaning and maintenance
  4. Restroom cleaning and sanitation
  5. Trash removal and disposal
  6. Window cleaning
  7. Equipment operation (vacuum, buffer, scrubber)
  8. Chemical handling and safety
  9. Basic maintenance and repairs
  10. Inventory management and ordering
  11. Safety protocols and procedures
  12. Groundskeeping and landscaping

Choose a resume format that makes your skills and accomplishments as a custodian clear to hiring managers.

3. Use numbers to emphasize your achievements

Hiring managers’ eyes will be drawn to numbers on your resume so it’s a good idea to add them whenever possible.

Including numbers in your professional experience section and resume summary lets you show what you’re capable of doing as a custodian, and will help you stand out from other candidates.

If you’re unsure how to add numbers to your resume’s bullet points, here are some examples to give you an idea:

Good bullet points for a custodian resume

  • Maintained cleanliness and sanitation for a 20,000 sq. ft. office building, ensuring a safe and healthy environment for 200 occupants
  • Reduced supply costs by 10% through efficient inventory management and bulk ordering practices
  • Implemented a new floor care schedule that extended the lifespan of floor finishes by 15%, resulting in cost savings for the facility
  • Successfully trained 5 new custodial staff members on proper cleaning procedures, chemical handling, and equipment operation
  • Received consistent positive feedback from building occupants and management, with a 95% satisfaction rating on cleanliness surveys

4. Include your relevant certifications

List certifications on your resume to prove to employers that you’ve been properly trained in the role you’re seeking.

There are various certifications for different aspects of custodian work, but here are the most common ones:

Certifications for custodians

Cleaning Management Institute (CMI) certifications:

  • Certified Custodial Technician (CCT)
  • Certified Custodial Supervisor (CCS)

International Sanitary Supply Association (ISSA) certifications:

  • Cleaning Industry Management Standard (CIMS)
  • Cleaning Industry Training Standard (CITS)

Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 10-hour General Industry or Construction course

Global Biorisk Advisory Council (GBAC) STAR Facility Accreditation

Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) certifications

  • Carpet Cleaning Technician (CCT)
  • Hard Floor Care Technician (HFCT)
