How to Write A Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) Resume

Health care is a high-stakes field. When a patient’s well being is on the line, a hiring manager can’t afford to take a chance on an applicant they’re unsure about.

But with a well-written resume, you can put them at ease, prove you have the skills and the know-how needed, and stand out among applicants for the job. That’s why you should make sure yours is as polished as possible.

If you’re feeling nervous about starting the nursing resume writing process, don’t be. Check out our video for writing a resume as a nurse, which outlines clear steps you can follow along with as you make your own:

To expand on the advice we provide in our video, here are three tips on how to write a strong LPN resume.

1. Highlight your LPN resume skills

Certain skills are non-optional for an LPN. Making clear you have them with a well-written resume skills section is essential.

If a hiring manager looks through your resume and doesn’t immediately see you have the required nursing skills, it’s unlikely they’ll ask you in for an interview.

Show hiring managers you have the knowledge to succeed with these in-demand LPN skills:

  • Clinical nursing skills
  • Medical software (Epic Systems and MEDITECH software)
  • Office suite software (Google Suite and Microsoft Office)
  • Time management skills
  • Critical thinking
  • People skills
  • Organizational skills
  • Charting and documenting
  • Problem solving
  • Management skills

Don’t forget to use a resume format that effectively emphasizes your strengths.

Clearly display your educational background as well. It’s impossible to succeed as a LPN without having formally studied nursing.

Although technical medical knowledge is crucial in health care, you need to include a mix of hard and soft skills. You can’t be an LPN if you don’t know how to give a shot, but you also need to know how to communicate with patients and organize your time effectively. Employers want someone who can excel in both ways.

2. Open with a strong LPN resume summary

A resume summary is the highlight reel of your resume. It highlights your greatest professional accomplishments and showcases them so hiring managers who are sorting through dozens or even hundreds of resumes can quickly see your qualifications.

Every LPN applying for a position will have many of the same skills as you. A well-utilized resume summary brings your hard and soft skills together, making them easy to see, and shows how you used them to exceed expectations at previous positions.

This sample has an excellent resume summary:

Dedicated LPN with 8+ years of experience in delivering high-quality care to diverse patient populations spanning medical/surgical and urology/respiratory units. Seeking to secure a challenging nursing position with a focus on delivering high-quality patient care.

This resume summary shows the candidate’s extensive experience, highlights the wide array of specialties they’ve worked in, and proves that they care about their caregiving duties.

3. Add hard numbers to your achievements

Health care is an intense combination of personal connection and objective analysis. Show you’re capable of both with hard numbers when you describe your accomplishments on your resume.

Take numbers from specific patient totals, time saved, or percentage improvements to show hiring managers what you can achieve in concrete terms.

The sample candidate here does this several times throughout their resume:

  • Consistently achieve over 90% score in patient satisfaction surveys based on exceptional patient care and service delivery.
  • Took and recorded 30+ patients’ vital signs daily, including height, weight, blood pressure, temperature, pulse, and respiration.
  • Oversaw all activities of 4+ CNAs such as drawing blood, performing EKG and wound care, and inserting urinary catheterization, IV catheter, trach, and feeding tubes.

These numbers prove the candidate is great with patients, can handle many of them, and knows how to manage multiple people. All these skills are transferable to the employer’s workplace.
