How to write a math teacher resume

You may have no trouble solving complex math equations, but what about articulating your instructional abilities in a resume?

If you’re able to present your math skills and teaching experience memorably in your math teacher resume, you’ll immediately be closer to landing your next teaching position.

Unsure where to begin? Here’s a video that takes you through the requirements that employers have when it comes to writing a good teacher resume:

To build on the advice from our video, we provide three more tips for writing a math teacher resume that proves you’ll help students reach their full potential in the classroom:

1. Highlight your mathematical prowess (and teaching skills)

Both schools and institutions seek math teachers who have a strong understanding of mathematical concepts along with the ability to instruct students of various ages.

Demonstrate these two abilities by showcasing your teaching experience, numeracy skills, and core competencies required for classroom management in your resume.

Start by listing essential math teacher technical skills in your resume’s skills section to assure hiring managers you have the right skill-set to instruct a classroom. Then in the work experience section, highlight a good mix of hard and soft skills throughout your bullet points to prove you’re more than qualified for the opening.

Here are vital math teacher hard skills employers look for:

  • Knowledge of the curriculum
  • Teaching methods
  • Math concepts (algebra, geometry, arithmetic, calculus, and statistics)
  • Creative lesson planning
  • Creating instructional materials
  • Standardized testing
  • Student evaluation
  • Learning management systems (Blackboard and Desire2Learn)
  • Microsoft Mathematics
  • Math Editor
  • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook)

Additionally, here are essential math teacher soft skills that employers look for in their new teacher hires:

  • Patience
  • Active listening
  • Communication skills
  • Critical thinking
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Organizational skills
  • Leadership skills
  • Language skills
  • Collaboration

Here’s an example of how to feature some of these skills in your resume bullet points:

Provided instructions to 140+ students in 25+ group settings with diverse learning styles

Delivered guidance to 6th–8th grade class math teachers on robust teaching strategies while assisting them with innovative ideas for instruction

Devised and implemented data-driven and long-term goals for 150+ students to achieve 85% benchmarks in various areas of high school math course

2. Write a strong resume summary (with some numbers)

Teaching positions are highly competitive. Because you’ll be competing against many other qualified teachers for each opening, you need to craft a strong resume summary to show employers why you’re uniquely qualified.

To write an attention-grabbing math teacher resume summary, sum up your skills and experience while aligning your talents to the job in two to three compact sentences.

Employers seek math teachers who are passionate about supporting students’ learning and have the math skills and teaching abilities to do so. Show them you’re a perfect match by highlighting your teaching experience, instructional skills, and commitment to cultivating a student-focused learning environment.

Here’s an example of a great math teacher resume summary:

Resourceful Math Teacher with 9+ years of experience in teaching math courses to high school and middle school students. Instrumental in devising effective instructional programs, targeting individual learning gaps to meet the needs of at-risk students.

In this example, the applicant effectively sums up their years of experience teaching students of various age groups. Very concisely, they list their strengths as a math teacher while highlighting job-specific skills, such as instructional planning and individual needs assessment.

If you don’t have much teaching experience to feature in your resume, knowing how to write an effective teacher resume objective will give your application a much-needed boost.

3. Don’t make your math teacher resume too long

You may be great with numbers, but communication skills are also a must for teaching — both oral and written. To reflect this talent in your resume, you need to ensure your resume isn’t long and rambling.

Generally, a one-page resume is most effective for adequately listing your skills and experience as a math teacher. Any longer, and your resume is either too wordy or you’ve included information that isn’t pertinent to the job.

The only exception to this rule would be if you have 10+ years of teaching experience to feature, or if you’re a published mathematician.

Here’s how to achieve the ideal resume length with your math teacher resume:

  • Cut out irrelevant jobs from your work history. When hiring for a math teacher, schools and institutions likely aren’t interested in hearing about your non-teaching experience.
  • In your resume bullet points, focus on the results you’ve delivered in past teaching positions. To make yourself a more compelling candidate, list your key selling points and accomplishments rather than providing a job description. For example, “Delivered wide-ranging lessons using real-life applications for better understanding of students, enhancing EOG math marks by 50% for algebra class.”
  • Only include job-specific skills in the resume skills section. For instance, your graphic design skills wouldn’t be applicable to teaching math concepts.

Avoid wordiness in your work experience section and include strong math teacher action verbs to effectively promote your skills and experience, such as “improved,” “increased,” “facilitated,” or “administered.”
