How to write an SDET resume
A software development engineer in test (SDET) is responsible for developing and executing test plans, debugging, and troubleshooting software issues. So your resume for an SDET job should highlight your experience with various testing tools and methodologies and your ability to communicate effectively with software developers and other technical team members.
Here are three tips on how to write an SDET resume that’ll help you stand out to hiring managers:
1. Make an attention-grabbing SDET resume introduction
To create an SDET resume that captures the attention of hiring managers, start with a powerful 2–4 sentence resume introduction. This part of your resume gives you an opportunity to briefly explain why you’re the best candidate for the job based on your relevant skills and experience.
To ensure that your SDET resume introduction makes a strong impression, include keywords from the job ad. Including keywords from the position requirements shows the employer that you have the skills and qualifications they’re looking for — and that you’ve taken the time to customize your resume for their job, rather than submitting a generic resume.
For instance, if the job ad emphasizes “agile methodology,” include your experience with that project management system in your introduction. Here’s an example of an SDET resume introduction that’s tailored to a specific job ad to catch the hiring manager’s eye:
2. Quantify the SDET job descriptions in your work experience section
Potential employers want to see concrete evidence of your experience and skills on your resume. So give them what they’re looking for by quantifying the SDET accomplishments on your resume with hard numbers.
By including data in your SDET resume, you’ll show employers just how valuable you are. For example, let’s say you increased test coverage by 15%. That’s a great accomplishment but even better when paired with a specific number. Including the actual percentage increase makes it much easier for employers to understand the extent of your achievement.
Here are a few examples of hard numbers you could describe in your SDET resume’s work experience section:
- the sizes of your projects
- the scope of your testing
- the number of bugs you found
- how much you reduced the mean time to recovery (MTTR)
- the amount of money you saved or generated with your projects
This is how one SDET job applicant quantified their accomplishments in their resume bullet points:
- Analyzed and disintegrated 15+ software systems weekly while working closely with other QA team members to enhance the systems’ overall design
- Spearheaded the administration of 10+ standard testing architectures, methodologies, processes, and tools in several systems
3. Emphasize your job-specific SDET skills
When you make your SDET resume, highlight both the hard and soft skills that make you the best fit for the job.
SDET abilities that you’ve developed in the classroom and on-the-job training are your hard skills. Your soft skills are personality traits that help you manage yourself and interact with others at work.
As an SDET, you need a lot of hard skills to succeed, including the following:
- Programming languages: Java, Python, C#
- Debugging tools: Chrome Web Debugger, Airbrake
- Automated testing frameworks: Cypress, EarlGrey, Selenium
- Performance and load testing expertise
- DevOps experience
- Quality assurance
However, you should also feature your soft skills, such as communication skills. As an SDET, you’ll need to be able to work closely with developers and other stakeholders to ensure that your company’s software meets quality standards. Therefore, showcasing your ability to collaborate effectively and identify potential issues early on in the development process makes you a more attractive candidate.
Here are more examples of soft skills hiring managers want to see on your resume for an SDET job:
- Attention to detail
- Self-motivation
- Innovation
- Organizational skills
- Management skills
- Good memory
- Ability to give and receive feedback
- Delegation
- Prioritization
