How To Write a Superintendent Resume

With jobs in construction projected to grow by 11% from 2020 to 2030 according to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics (BLS), there’s no shortage of superintendent positions opening up.

However, that doesn’t mean getting a construction superintendent job is going to be easy.

Superintendents need to perform quality control and manage other construction managers and supervisors who may be on the job site. You’ll need a well-written superintendent resume to show you have what it takes to plan, organize, and supervise construction projects from start to finish.

Showcase your construction knowledge and experience

Many employers won’t require that construction superintendents have a degree and will hire on the basis of construction experience and skill set.

To land a job as a superintendent, you’ll need to reassure the hiring manager that you have the necessary experience and knowledge to respond to the demands of modern construction projects.

Because each construction project is different, you should use your resume’s work experience section to showcase relevant experience you’ve acquired in your past construction jobs, like in this example:

In this example, the candidate uses action words and hard numbers to highlight their skills and accomplishments in short and effective sentences.

To make sure the information you include in your resume’s work experience section will keep a hiring manager’s interest, include resume keywords from the job description to show that you have the expertise required for the position.

List your education

Employers look for candidates with a college degree in construction management, construction science, or engineering to better respond to the increasing complexity of construction processes.

Where you place your education section on your resume will either emphasize or de-emphasize your educational background. As a candidate with a few years of experience, your education should be placed beneath your work experience section or toward the bottom of your resume.

Make sure you list your university and its location, your degree, and the date you earned it, like in the example below:

If you’re pursuing an additional degree, include it along with your estimated graduation date.

Include your certifications

With safety being a top priority, you’ll need to showcase your knowledge in construction with particular attention to safety, quality, and health standards.

You should clearly list your relevant certifications on your superintendent resume toward the top of your resume.

Listing certifications on your resume shows you have a diverse range of skills and helps emphasize your expertise.

If you have many certifications, consider using a separate certifications section. If you only have one or two certifications, you can include them within your resume skills section.

Prove you possess the right skill set

With such a heavy set of responsibilities, superintendents are basically versatile on-site project managers.

Between scheduling and coordinating deliveries, managing crews, and ensuring projects meet safety standards and compliance, you’ll have to show you can do it all with the right hard and soft skills.

If you’re not sure what skills to highlight on your resume, here are some of the most important skills to have as a successful construction superintendent:

Superintendent Hard Skills

  • Scheduling
  • Construction Management
  • Coordinating
  • OSHA Standards
  • Building information modeling (BIM)
  • Structural Engineering
  • Building codes and regulations
  • Construction Planning
  • Budget Management
  • Job site health and safety control
  • Risk assessment
  • Quality Control
  • MS Office skills

Superintendent Soft Skills

  • Communication skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Project management skills
  • Negotiation
  • Patience
  • Leadership skills
  • Problem-solving
  • Time management
  • Decision-making

Finally, be sure to carefully read the superintendent job description so you know which experiences to highlight specifically. Employers look for applicants who fit what they’re looking for and taking the time to highlight the same required information frames you as an ideal candidate.
