How to write a technical resume

It’s important to clearly demonstrate your technical skills and qualifications on your resume, so you’ll have a better chance of getting interviews and the job you want.

Here are four steps you can take to write a strong technical resume that’ll get hiring managers talking.

1. Include your relevant technical skills

For technical jobs, you need to prove that you’re proficient in the core competencies that employers are looking for on your resume, like industry software and technical hardware.

One way to do this is by listing your relevant job skills in your resume’s skills section Here’s a general list of technical skills you can include, depending on your industry:

  • Database software (Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Access, MySQL, Oracle JDBC, Apache Hive)
  • HTML
  • Javascript
  • Hardware support (circuit boards, chips, processors, routers, laptops, printers)
  • Software support (apps, programming, website development)
  • Multiple operating systems (Apple, Windows, Linux)
  • Problem-solving
  • Customer service skills

Here’s an example of how to list technical skills from a machine learning resume:

Technical Skills:

  • Languages: Python, R, SQL
  • ML Frameworks: TensorFlow, PyTorch, scikit-learn
  • Deep Learning: CNNs, RNNs, Transformers
  • Big Data: Apache Spark, Hadoop
  • Cloud Platforms: AWS SageMaker, Google Cloud AI Platform

2. Add hard numbers to your achievements

If you aren’t adding numbers to your resumes, it’s time to start. Hard numbers show what value you can potentially bring to a company, which:

  1. makes it easier for hiring managers to vet you
  2. gives you more leverage if you want to negotiate your salary later

Take some time to think through how you can quantify your experiences. How many tickets do you close in a day? Did you kick-start a new project, or launch a system that saved company resources (whether that’s time or money)?

Include all of your quantifiable achievements in the bullet points of your professional experience section. For example:

  • Implemented a new processing system, reducing turnaround time by 12%
  • Led migration of legacy system to cloud infrastructure, resulting in 30% cost savings and 99.99% uptime
  • Optimized database queries, improving application response time by 40%

3. Highlight your education and certifications

Most tech jobs require specific degrees, certifications, or other specialized training. Clearly outlining your educational background on your resume is essential because it demonstrates that you have a solid foundation of knowledge and expertise in your field.

Here’s an example of a properly-formatted education section on a tech resume:

EDUCATION

Bachelor of Science in Computer Science
Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA
May 20XX
GPA: 3.8/4.0

Relevant Coursework: Advanced Algorithms, Machine Learning, Distributed Systems, Cloud Computing

Certifications, on the other hand, show your commitment to continuous learning and staying current with industry standards and best practices. They validate your skills in specific areas or with particular technologies, which can be especially important in fields like cybersecurity, cloud computing, or data science.

Here’s an example of how to list certifications on your resume:

CERTIFICATIONS

  • AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate (20XX)
  • Certified Information Systems Security Professional (20XX)
  • Oracle Certified Professional, Java SE 11 Developer (20XX)

4. Tie your resume together with a strong technical resume summary

Send a clear message to hiring managers that you’re qualified for the role by starting off your resume with an effective resume summary.

A good technical resume summary should highlight your greatest technical strengths and qualifications in two to three sentences. Start off by stating how many years of experience you have, and some of your key technical skills. Then, list two or three of your most impressive tech-related achievements.

Here’s an example of a resume summary for a technical job:

Technical resume summary

Recent computer science graduate with hands-on experience in AI project development through internships and coursework. Eager to apply problem-solving abilities and attention to detail in an AI tester role. Proficient in various testing frameworks and version control systems.
