Returning to work stay at home mom resume

If you’re returning to work after several years as a stay at home mom, here’s how your resume should look:

Stay at home mom resume highlights

  • Lists stay at home parent experience: This applicant lists her time working as a stay-at-home mom as an entry on her resume, and uses it to showcase how she’s kept up with the marketing industry. She lists some of the online courses she’s completed and talks about her volunteer social media work.
  • Emphasizes accomplishments from formal work experience: While this mom’s stay at home entry is 3 bullet points long, she uses 7 bullet points to expand on her accomplishments in her previous role. And, by writing detailed bullet points that quantify her resume achievements (in other words, she adds numbers to them), hiring managers can see what she’s capable of.

No experience stay at home parent resume

It’s still possible to write an effective resume as a stay at home mom even if you lack formal work experience. Here’s how:

Stay at home mom resume highlights

  • Talks about volunteer work: Because this mom doesn’t have any formal work experience, she focuses on her involvement as a PTA volunteer, using numbers to highlight how much she’s raised for it.
  • Includes relevant coursework: If you don’t have any formal work experience, it’s fine to add relevant coursework to your resume. Since this mom is applying for a visual merchandising role, she highlights courses she’s completed that are relevant to that position, showing she’d easily adapt to the role she’s applying for.
  • Uses a hobbies and interests section: To fill out her resume, this mom showcases some hobbies and interests that have skills in common with the visual merchandising position she’s going for. For example, interior decorating indicates she’s creative and can create visually appealing displays.

How to write a stay at home mom resume

In addition to our stay at home parent resumes above, here are our detailed tips to help you craft that job-winning resume.

1. Show you kept up with industry changes

You may have been out of the workforce for a few years, but there are several ways you can show you kept up with changes in your sector.

Add any certifications you’ve earned during your time as a stay at home parent to a certifications section on your resume, like this:

CERTIFICATIONS

  • Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA), 20XX

You can also highlight that you’ve kept up with industry development by adding a strategic bullet point to your resume’s stay at home mom entry:

Good bullet point for a stay at home mom resume

  • Completed “Residential Cleaning Certification” and “Home Hygiene and Sanitization” courses with distinction, receiving top scores of 92% and 87%, respectively.

You can also add such bullet points to your stay at home mom cover letter.

2. Highlight any transferable skills

Whether you’ve held a formal job or not, the skills you’ve applied as a stay at home dad or mom are transferable skills. In other words, they can be just as useful in the workplace as at home.

Here are the top transferable skills you’ll have developed as a stay at home parent that you can put on your resume if you have no industry-specific abilities:

  1. Time management
  2. Organization
  3. Multitasking
  4. Problem-solving
  5. Budgeting and financial management
  6. Communication
  7. Negotiation and conflict resolution
  8. Planning and coordination
  9. Adaptability and flexibility
  10. Teaching and mentoring
  11. Attention to detail
  12. Leadership and team management
  13. Empathy and emotional intelligence
  14. Crisis management
  15. Project management

If you’re returning to work, make sure to add hard skills from your industry that you have.

3. Flesh out your time as a stay at home mom

It may be tempting to leave your time as a stay at home mom off your resume, but you should actually add it to your experience section as its own entry.

Once you’ve done that, you fill it out and list things like:

  • skills from a previous job that you’ve developed through online courses or even through parenting
  • times when you’ve performed the responsibilities of your job as a favor for friends or as volunteer work
  • what you’ve achieved as a parent if it hints at what you can achieve in the workplace

Here’s an example of a stay at home parent entry for a former cellphone saleswoman in an experience section of a resume:

Stay at home mom resume work entry

STAY AT HOME MOM
Pearl City, HI | 20XX–20XX

  • Developed and implemented effective strategies to manage a household budget, achieving a 15% reduction in monthly expenses
  • Enhanced communication and negotiation skills through daily interactions and conflict resolution with family members
  • Organized and led community playgroups and activities, fostering a sense of community and demonstrating leadership and event planning skills
  • Kept up to date with the latest advances in cellphone technology and major mobile providers’ subscription plans

4. Consider adding relevant hobbies

Hobbies and interests are more common on European resumes but there’s no rule saying you can’t add them in America, especially if you’re lacking formal work experience.

The trick is to choose hobbies and interests that align with your target job. In other words, they should apply skills that are the same as the skills listed in your target job’s description.

For example, if you’re applying to be a barista, here are some good hobbies to list (along with why):

Stay at home mom hobbies
  • Baking and cooking: Shows familiarity with working in a kitchen, attention to detail, and creativity, which are useful skills for preparing and serving coffee and food items in a café
  • Gardening: Shows appreciation for fresh ingredients and the importance of sustainable practices, which is beneficial in a café setting that values fresh and organic products
  • Volunteer work: Indicates strong interpersonal skills, a community-oriented mindset, and the ability to work well with others, all of which are important for providing excellent customer service as a barista
  • Arts and crafts: Reflects your creative and artistic side, which can be useful for learning how to make latte art and creating a welcoming and aesthetically pleasing environment for customers
