Dear [Mr./Ms./Mx.] [Hiring Manager’s Last Name],

I’m excited to apply for the Customer Service Representative position at United Airlines. As a recent Bachelor of Arts in Communications graduate from Westwood University, I’m eager to bring my strong communication skills and dedication to customer satisfaction to your team.

During my time in college, I volunteered with Helping Hands Community Center where I assisted in coordinating community events and provided support to attendees. This experience honed my ability to resolve concerns efficiently while maintaining a positive and professional demeanor in fast-paced environments.

Additionally, my academic background has equipped me with problem-solving abilities and attention to detail which I’m confident will help me deliver excellent service to your customers.

I’m enthusiastic about the opportunity to contribute to United Airlines and would welcome the chance to discuss how my skills align with your needs. Thank you for your time and consideration. Please feel free to reach out to me at (123) 456-7890 or your.name@email.com.

Sincerely,
Your Name

Dear Ms. Johnston,

My name is James Amore, and I’m excited to apply for the position of Junior IT specialist at the French Central Inn, Charleston. I’m a recent graduate (June 2023) in Management Information Systems (MIS) from Charleston Southern University, and I’m eager to enter the workforce. I meet all of the academic requirements mentioned in your job posting.

Growing up, I took a liking to all things tech and digital, which led to me picking MIS as my major. Apart from all the tech courses during my MIS studies, I thoroughly enjoyed and excelled in my psychology courses. I’m especially interested in the intersection of tech and humanity (specifically, how people respond and adapt to technological changes). It’s a topic that I discuss frequently on my tech blog: techfacts.com.

During my final year of university, I interned at Safe Homes Inc., a vendor providing an array of home security systems. I worked on both the hardware and software side, installing physical equipment as well as configuring the requisite software, and involved elements of IoT.

What excites me most about this position is that the role involves extensive work with the Internet of Things (IoT). Working at the French Central inn would be a perfect opportunity to combine my skills and passion.

I look forward to putting my knowledge and skills to use as a productive member of your IT department and learning from the best in the industry. In an interview, I’d love to discuss my short and long-term career goals and how they align with the French Central Inn’s tech vision. I await your call.

Sincerely,

James Amore

Dear Admissions Committee,

I’m excited to apply for the Master of Science in Environmental Science program at the University of California, Berkeley. With my background in Biology and a deep interest in climate change mitigation, I’m eager to contribute to and grow within your esteemed program.

During my undergraduate studies at the University of Washington, I developed a strong foundation in ecological research and data analysis. My research on wetland restoration strategies allowed me to conduct fieldwork, analyze environmental data, and collaborate with faculty on a published paper in The Journal of Environmental Science. Beyond academics, my internship at the Pacific Northwest Conservation Center strengthened my skills in GIS mapping, policy analysis, and community outreach.

What draws me to UC Berkeley is its pioneering research in environmental sustainability and its commitment to real-world impact. I’m particularly interested in Dr. Emily Carter’s work on carbon sequestration and believe my background in ecological modeling aligns well with her research. I’m eager to contribute to ongoing projects while also exploring interdisciplinary approaches to conservation and policy development.

I would be honored to join the MS in Environmental Science program and further my academic and professional goals within this vibrant intellectual community. Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to the opportunity to discuss my application further.

Sincerely,

Your Name

5 tips for writing a recent graduate cover letter

Putting together a cover letter for a job as a recent graduate can be tricky, especially if you don’t have any formal work or internship experience. Fortunately, it’s still possible to write a convincing cover letter that helps you land a job.

Here’s a breakdown of what to include in your recent graduate cover letter to impress employers and land your first job or internship out of college.

1. Write an impactful introduction

Your cover letter’s introduction is your first chance to make an impression on employers, so it’s important to make it count.

Include the following information:

  • Your name
  • Your degree
  • The position you’re applying for
  • Your most relevant skills

To make your introduction more compelling, instead of just stating the basics, frame it in a way that highlights something unique about you.

If someone referred you to the job, mention it in your introduction. A personal connection can build an immediate rapport with the hiring manager and set you apart from other candidates.

Example of a recent graduate cover letter introduction

My name is Marcus Winfield, and I’m writing to apply for the position of Junior Architect at R&G Designs Inc. I recently graduated from Woodbury University’s School of Architecture, after which I acquired my architect’s license from the California Architects Board. I was excited to learn about this opportunity from Jordan Ellis who spoke highly of your team and encouraged me to apply.

2. Connect your skills to the job

When applying for a job as a recent graduate, don’t worry about your lack of work experience. Instead, showcase the personality traits and soft skills you possess that make you an excellent match for the job.

First, think about all of your relevant interests and skills, or areas of work that you’re passionate about. Then, use your cover letter to connect them to the work being done at the company you want to work at.

Here’s an example of how one candidate uses their cover letter to advertise their language abilities and explain why they would be useful to the employer:

Example of how to highlight skills in a cover letter

I’m certain my fluency in Spanish would make me an excellent fit for the role considering how frequently your department collaborates with researchers from the Autonomous University of Barcelona.

If you’re applying for a job directly in your field of academic expertise, you can also explain what drew you to the field in the first place.

3. Highlight internship or project work experience

Your second and third paragraphs should be the core of your recent grad cover letter.

This is where you highlight your relevant experience, whether it’s from internships, extracurricular activities, or coursework. Your objective is to highlight any experience that taught you skills that are valuable in your target industry (e.g., your ability to work on a team, solve problems, or learn quickly).

Example of how to showcase experience in a cover letter

During my two summer internships at Astral Consulting Inc., I was assigned to work alongside Marc Jacobson, a manager in the auditing and compliance department. During this time, I gained valuable on-the-job experience in contemporary accounting software and practices. I helped audit financial statements of eight multi-million dollar companies and also played a major role in writing out the audit reports under Marc’s mentorship.

Note that the applicant provides specific examples of what they achieved during their internships to demonstrate the impact of their work.

Expressing your experience in terms of accomplishments rather than tasks or duties is more effective because it signals to hiring managers that you’re able to achieve results.

If you’re a recent high-school graduate, you can also include volunteer work or recurring responsibilities at home (like mowing the lawn) on your cover letter.

4. Show enthusiasm for the job

Employers understand that as a recent graduate, you’ll likely be writing a cover letter with no work experience. What they want to see is that you’re passionate about the work and are enthusiastic to learn.

That’s why in your fourth paragraph you should take the opportunity to explain what about the position excites you.

Be as specific as possible — if you’re interested in the product the company makes or even their work culture, be sure to mention it. Show that you’re interested in the specific job you’re applying to, and not just any job.

Example of how to express enthusiasm in a cover letter

I’m aware that your Grand Forks location will be opening in September. With my experience and passion for customer service, I believe I will be an asset to your clinic, providing clients with unforgettable beauty experiences that will convert them into regular customers.

5. Finish with a clear call to action

Wrap up your new grad cover letter by restating your interest in the position. Additionally, encourage the hiring manager to contact you to discuss your qualifications further.

This not only shows that you’re enthusiastic about the job, but it also pushes the hiring manager to reach out to you.
