How to write your math tutor resume

Math tutors use their expert math skills and knowledge to help students who are struggling to pass their classes, preparing for school exams or standardized tests, or looking to get ahead.

Whether you’re seeking private math tutoring positions, jobs through online platforms such as Wyzant, or jobs with in-person tutoring programs like Sylvan and Kumon, you need to make a resume that shows your track record and conveys your teaching style.

Here are four tips to help you write a job-winning math tutor resume:

1. Show potential clients you fit their needs in your resume summary

Let the private client or tutoring company hiring manager know immediately that you fit their needs in your resume summary. Placed at the top of your resume, your math tutor resume summary should include:

  • the math subjects you tutor
  • your subject-matter qualifications (e.g., degree, standardized test scores)
  • the ages/grades you can tutor
  • your specialties (e.g., standardized test prep, homework help)
  • the medium that you tutor on (e.g., travel to students’ homes, online)

For example, look how this applicant adds the above information to their resume summary:

Math tutor with a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and 3+ years of experience in tutoring grades K-12. Specialize in SAT and ACT test prep. Scored 1580/1600 SAT and 33/36 ACT. Looking to help students learn to love math and succeed through in-home or online tutoring.

Tailor your resume summary to the job post. For example, specify the tutoring company by name, and show that you understand and can help the company reach its goals, such as providing students with math skills or helping students gain admission to top colleges.

If you’re applying to a job post for a private client, you can still customize your resume summary. For example, if the job ad says you’ll be tutoring a 5th grade student, you can write that you’re “eager to help your 5th grader excel at math.”

2. Be specific in your work experience section

As a math tutor, you understand the power of numbers. Use numbers heavily throughout your resume’s work experience section to give employers an idea of your tutoring methods and why you’re the best candidate. You may want to include:

  • the number of students you’ve tutored before (e.g., 1:1 or more)
  • how often you can meet with students (e.g., 3 times per week)
  • how long your sessions are (e.g., 30 minutes)
  • the total number of students you’ve tutored (only if this number is very high, such as 50+ students)
  • how you helped raise a student’s grade in a class or on a standardized test (e.g., raised the student’s overall grade from 40% to 90%)
  • the percentage of your students who passed their classes or standardized tests

You should also discuss your relevant accomplishments in your work experience section to show employers you’re qualified to teach math. Examples of achievements to add are:

  • winning a math competition
  • getting a perfect (or near perfect) score on a standardized test
  • earning a college scholarship or graduate fellowship based on math ability

3. List your relevant education information

As a private tutor, the highest degree you need depends on the grades you plan to tutor. In some cases, you may even be able to tutor high school students as only a high school graduate yourself if you’ve successfully passed AP classes or scored exceptionally on standardized tests.

Also, you can tutor on many online tutoring platforms while you work toward your undergraduate degree. But most traditional tutoring companies require you to have a bachelor’s degree.

So list your highest level of education in your resume’s education section. Also, if the employer is looking for tutors in specific math subjects, add your relevant coursework and the grades you received in those classes, like this:

EDUCATION

Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Bachelor’s in Applied Mathematics, May 20XX

Graduated summa cum laude (3.9/4.0 overall GPA, 4.0/4.0 major GPA)

Relevant coursework: Calculus I and II (A+), Linear Algebra (A), Physics (A+)

4. Include hard and soft skills

Your work experience and skills section should showcase your technical skills. A subset of hard skills, technical skills are developed through training or education in STEM fields.

Math tutors need hard skills like:

  • math knowledge
  • calculator and computer skills
  • Excel
  • MATLAB
  • statistical software, like SAS or MiniTab

But a good math tutor is different from a mathematician. Even if you can do linear algebra problems in your sleep, teaching someone linear algebra also requires soft skills, or skills related to your personality that determine how you work with others.

Emphasize some of the following soft skills on your math tutor resume to show you can pass your knowledge on to students:

  • Communication skills
  • People skills
  • Patience
  • Giving feedback
  • Listening skills
  • Leadership skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Problem solving skills
  • Time management skills
  • Organizational skills
  • Resource (textbooks, videos, practice tests, problem sets) use and development
  • Individualized instruction
  • Providing students with strategies to solve problems rather than just giving answers
