How to write a babysitter resume

Let’s look at 4 expert tips on how to write an effective babysitting resume so you can land your next childcare gig.

1. Highlight your relevant babysitter skills

You probably already have many of the skills necessary to become a good babysitter. Have you helped change the diapers of younger cousins before? Or maybe you regularly help your siblings with their homework? These are the kind of child care skills parents want to see on your resume.

If you don’t have much experience looking after children, consider taking an online babysitting course to fill out your resume.

Here are some examples of hard skills for your babysitting resume:

  • Able to bend and lift
  • Administering first aid
  • Providing medication
  • Performing CPR
  • Child-proofing rooms
  • Changing diapers
  • Bottle feeding
  • Dressing a child
  • Reading to children
  • Potty training
  • Medication dosing
  • Tutoring younger children
  • Preparing food using microwaves or stoves
  • Vacuuming
  • Using cleaning products
  • Operating dishwashers
  • Knowledge of washing machines and dryers

Even if you have all of the above hard skills, you still need to highlight your personality and work ethic so that parents trust you with their children. Parents are looking for babysitters with these soft skills:

  • Patience
  • Communication
  • People skills
  • Caring and empathetic attitude
  • Friendliness
  • Positive outlook
  • Conflict resolution
  • Disciplinary skills
  • Responsible and focused
  • Organization
  • Leadership
  • Problem solving
  • Time management

Finally, it’s always a good idea to use specific keywords from job posts to demonstrate you have the skills a family is looking for. We analyzed hundreds of real job ads for babysitters, and here are the top keywords:

If you’re first aid and CPR certified, list your certifications on your resume so families can see that you’re able to keep their children safe in case of emergencies.

2. Write a compelling babysitting resume description

After writing your name and contact details in your resume header, include a short but powerful resume objective that summarizes your top skills, volunteer experiences, and work history in 2–4 sentences.

A resume objective is a short paragraph and essential part of your resume because it describes to a family why you’re the ideal babysitting candidate for them, and makes them want to continue reading.

Below is an example of a well-written babysitter resume objective:

Responsible babysitter with 4+ years of experience caring for children during weekends, evenings, and summer and winter breaks. Skilled in creating fun, engaging, and educational activities, while prioritizing children’s safety and well-being. Trusted by parents and provide affection for all the children I care for. Seeking a responsible role as a weekend Babysitter for your family.

Here’s why this example works:

  1. Responsibility is critical for being a good babysitter, which is why this applicant mentions prioritizing the safety and well-being of the children they babysit.
  2. The candidate emphasizes their past experience to show they’ve taken care of children before.
  3. Fun, creative, and educational activities are important parts of helping children feel happy and engaged.

3. List children’s ages and relevant information using hard numbers

Taking care of young children is different from taking care of older children — by telling parents the age range of children you’ve looked after, you make your resume more informative. Using numbers to describe accomplishments can also make your resume sound more impressive.

Take a look at these bullet point examples and you’ll notice a common theme. Pay attention to the bolding:

  • Cared for a 5-year-old boy and 8-year-old girl during parents’ evening absences
  • Planned 15+ play dates with other families on the parents’ list of approved playmates
  • Help 8-year-old girl with homework and other activities, increasing her test scores at school by 13%

The candidate listed the ages of the children they took care of because it gives parents and guardians a better idea of their capabilities. They also use numbers and percentages to describe their achievements in more detail.

Besides the age ranges of children, you can mention how many families you’ve worked with, the number of hours you babysat, and the types of fun or educational activities you’ve created.

4. Include other relevant experiences

If this is your first time applying for a babysitting job or you’re struggling to make your resume a full page long, you can include other experiences that show you’re responsible and trustworthy.

For example, if you’re the captain of your school’s soccer team, you can mention this in the education section of your resume. Having leadership roles like these on your resume tells parents that you’re a reliable person.

You can also include academic achievements to impress parents. Here’s an example:

EDUCATION

Springfield High School – Springfield, IL
Expected Graduation: 20XX

  • Team Captain, Varsity Soccer Team (20XX–Present)
  • Honor Roll Student (20XX–Present)

Volunteer experience is another thing families love to see on a resume, because it’s a sign that you have a good work ethic and are used to following instructions.

Volunteer work should be listed in the experience section of your resume, like this:

RELEVANT EXPERIENCE

Springfield Community Center – Springfield, IL
Youth Activity Volunteer (20XX–20XX)

  • Supervise children (ages 4–10) in arts, crafts, and outdoor games
  • Help organize events like holiday parties and reading programs
  • Create a safe and positive environment for the children
