4 tips for writing a great front desk resume

To get the front desk position you want, you’ll need a resume that highlights your excellent people skills, organizational expertise, and your commitment to providing quality customer service.

Creating a great front desk resume doesn’t need to be difficult, either. Follow the tips below to get the perfect resume format and highlight the front desk skills the hiring manager wants to see.

1. Include skills and other keywords from the job description

An effective front desk resume clearly shows how you can meet the company’s needs by listing the skills and experience they’re looking for in a candidate.

To show employers that you’re qualified for the role, target your resume to the position by including specific resume keywords from the job description every time you send out an application.

For example, one of the front desk duties listed in the job description might be:

“Answer phones and greet clients in a personalized and friendly manner”

In this case, you should try to naturally incorporate the words “personalized” and “friendly” into your resume bullet points. Here’s an example:

“Greeted customers as they arrived at the hotel and provided friendly, personalized service tailored to their specific requests”

If you’re not sure which keywords to include, check out this list of the most common words and phrases we pulled from real front desk job listings:

2. Write an effective resume objective

The first thing a hiring manager will see when they open your application is your resume objective. As such, it’s your chance to make a good first impression and grab the hiring manager’s attention.

A resume objective should mention your:

  1. Work experience
  2. Relevant skills
  3. Notable qualifications
  4. Reason for applying

Here’s an example of a front desk resume objective containing these four elements:

Resume Objective

Front Desk Specialist with 2+ years of experience supporting office operations and acting as the first point of contact for customers and clients. Graduated from the University of San Francisco with a B.A. in Business Administration, and CAP-certified. Looking to apply my communication, time management, and people skills as a Front Desk Receptionist at Mallard’s Technology Inc.

3. Showcase your relevant administrative skills

Hiring managers have a limited amount of time to spend considering each application. Make sure your resume catches their attention by writing a strong skills section that highlights your most valuable front desk abilities.

If you’re not sure where to start, here are some examples of common skills required for front desk jobs, separated into hard and soft skills:

Hard skills:

  • Google Workspace
  • Microsoft Office
  • Foreign language skills
  • Visitor management software
  • Email writing
  • Slack

Hard skills include the ability to use different software applications, speak foreign languages, and complete specific tasks. They’re important to include in your resume because employers want to know you are capable of completing the basic requirements of the job.

Soft skills, like interpersonal skills and communication, are important for front desk roles, too, because you’ll be interacting with people on a daily basis. It’s better to incorporate these into the bullet points of your professional experience section and demonstrate them at your interview. You can also give context to your soft skills in your cover letter.

Soft skills:

  • Friendliness
  • Communication
  • Conflict resolution
  • Problem solving
  • Responsibility
  • Professionalism
  • Time management
  • Patience

List your hard skills in the additional skills section of your resume, and incorporate your soft skills into the bullet points of your professional experience section.

4. Include hard numbers when describing your front desk duties

Hiring managers want to see real-world examples of what you’re capable of, so in addition to listing your skills and experience, you’ll want to include numbers to quantify the accomplishments on your resume.

Add numbers or percentages to make it easier for hiring managers to understand your contributions at a previous position, and it shows what you can achieve if hired.

Here’s an example of how to effectively use hard numbers in your front desk resume:

Quantified statement
