A day in the life of a McDonald’s worker

Curious about what your day-to-day will look like as a McDonald’s employee? In this video, Kish Israni documents his first day on the job:

Three tips for writing a McDonald’s resume

If you’ve been considering trying out for a role at McDonald’s, now might be a great time to jump on board. The Fortune 500 company recently announced plans to raise wages for McDonald’s employees at company-owned restaurants and is encouraging other franchisees to do the same.

Like any other restaurant chain, McDonald’s values candidates who can provide excellent customer service and help maintain the brand’s quality standards. Format your resume in a way that shows them you’d make a great addition to their team.

With these three tips, you’ll be sure to write a McDonald’s resume that’ll leave the hiring manager thinking “I’m lovin’ it”:

1. Don’t skip writing a good crew member resume introduction

Between serving customers and maintaining a busy kitchen, McDonald’s managers don’t get a lot of downtime. They don’t have much time to look over new resumes, so getting their attention quickly is essential.

Leading with a good resume introduction grabs a hiring manager’s attention and gives them insight into who you are and what makes you qualified to be a McDonald’s crew member.

The key to writing a strong resume introduction for McDonald’s is to underscore the skills, quantifiable achievements, and notable accomplishments from past positions that have prepared you for the food service industry.

Here’s an example of a resume introduction for someone with some previous food service experience including relevant past experience and multiple quantifiable achievements:

Food handler certified fast food worker with 2+ years of experience delivering exceptional service to a high volume of customers. A positive attitude and strong work ethic have resulted in receiving the Employee of the Month award on 3 occasions. Reliable employee with a perfect attendance record. Looking to grow into a crew member role at the Arlington McDonald’s branch and contribute to its success by increasing sales.

If you lack relevant work experience, however, use your introduction to highlight your relevant skills and your passion for working in fast food service:

College student with excellent teamwork and interpersonal skills and a commitment to excellence. Participant in the Student Union, demonstrating responsibility and leadership skills. Seeking a crew member position at the Everett McDonald’s restaurant to provide exceptional customer service and gain experience in the food and beverage industry.

2. Showcase your relevant experience

The most important section of any resume is the work experience section, and applying to McDonald’s is no different. This is where hiring managers look to decide if you are a good fit for the position.

Here are some tips for building a solid work experience section:

How to list McDonald’s work experience (or other related food service experience)

It’s standard to write 3-5 bullet points for each position you’ve had – more for your current position and less for positions further in the past.

To impress employers, highlight details about your work experience that demonstrate your skills and accomplishments. Additionally, include hard numbers in some of your bullet points to help illustrate the exact impact you made at work. Use present simple tense for current positions, and past tense for previous positions.

Here is a work history example from a McDonald’s Crew Member position:

McDonald’s Crew Member

McDonald’s, Las Vegas NV

  • Welcome customers and take orders with a friendly attitude, increasing overall customer satisfaction
  • Operate the point-of-service (POS) system efficiently, handling cash responsibly and ensuring that all register opening and closing procedures are followed exactly
  • Practicing the highest standards of food safety and hygiene to ensure the safety and best possible experience for our customers
  • Monitor the front of house, making sure that chairs and tables are clean, the condiment bar is fully stocked and wiped down, and that the bathroom is in excellent condition
  • Perform cleaning duties during each shift, maintaining the highest standards of hygiene and cleanliness and contributing to consistently high scores from the health department

Now here’s an example from a McDonald’s General Manager:

General Manager

McDonald’s, Reno NV

  • Train staff in proper food handling and hygiene practices, making sure the store is operating at the highest possible standards
  • Take inventory regularly, making sure that the store has enough stock to maintain operations without wasting product
  • Generate realistic sales goals and implement strategies to meet those goals, resulting in a sales increase of 7% over 6 months
  • Monitor store appliances and equipment, ensuring proper functioning and receipt of required maintenance
  • Ensure that all employees are knowledgeable about ongoing promotions and are actively informing customers, leading to an increase in promotional sales by 13%

If you’re struggling to think of hard numbers you can include in your own McDonald’s resume, some examples of quantifiable achievements you might include are:

  • Number of average orders taken or customers helped during a shift
  • Attendance records
  • Any awards or special recognition received from management
  • Any positive data gleaned from customer feedback cards, such as an increase in satisfaction
  • Any contribution you’ve made to an increase in sales over a specific period

Tip: If you don’t know how to write a resume with no experience, don’t worry. There are other relevant experiences that can show off your skills. Title the section “Relevant Experience”, and use alternatives such as extra-curricular activities, volunteer work, or relevant coursework to show off those skills.

3. Highlight important food service skills

Working at McDonald’s is challenging and requires a variety of skills that hiring managers are on the lookout for. Show them that you’re the ideal person for the job by writing a strong, targeted resume skills section.

An ideal McDonald’s resume skills list will include a mix of hard skills (technical) and soft skills (character traits).

Here’s an example of what a skills section might look like for a McDonald’s crew member:

Additional Skills:

  • Excellent knowledge of POS systems
  • Food handler certified
  • Highly organized and efficient
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Exceptional customer service skills

If you’re not sure what skills you should list on your own resume, here are some general skills that are perfect for working at McDonald’s or any food service position:

McDonald's Resume Skills
  • Point-of-service systems
  • Computer skills
  • Deep cleaning
  • Food handling certification
  • Fluent in Spanish and English
  • Customer service
  • Communication skills
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Teamwork
  • Problem-solving
  • Self-motivation
  • Organizational skills
