How to write a massage therapist resume

To convince hiring managers you have the right massage therapist training and practical experience, you need to tailor your resume to the position and use a professional resume format that makes your abilities stand out.

Sound like a lot? Our massage therapist resume sample and writing tips can help simplify things for you.

Check out our professional resume-writing advice for those in the massage therapy industry.

1. Open with a strong resume summary

Working as a massage therapist requires a highly specialized skillset, so most applicants will already meet the technical requirements for the job. To set yourself apart from the other applicants, write a strong resume summary to explain why you’re the perfect person for the job.

To craft a compelling resume summary, sum up your qualifications concisely and emphasize how your skills and experience in massage therapy will benefit the organization.

Here’s an example of an effective massage therapist resume summary:

Certified Massage Therapist with 5+ years of experience delivering excellent care to clients. Highly skilled in delivering quality therapeutic massage services to clients with a focus on overall health and wellness. Proven track record of increasing membership sales, expanding clientele base, and promoting business.

In this example, the applicant sums up their years of experience in the field while highlighting essential massage therapist skills. In three short sentences, they showcase their strengths as a massage therapist and provide examples of their most impressive accomplishments on their resume.

2. Highlight your key skills

As a massage therapist, you spend most of your time evaluating patients’ needs, developing individualized treatment plans and treating painful or tense body areas through deep tissue massage.

So you need a strong understanding of massage techniques and service-oriented skills to provide exceptional patient care.

To prove you have the right skills to diagnose and treat patients, list your credentials along with any medical-related certifications on your resume.

In your skills section and work history bullet points, include a good mix of hard and soft skills to show you’re a rounded, competent candidate. For example, customer service skills and teamwork are critical soft skills for working closely with patients and other professionals in the field.

Here’s a list of key massage therapist skills:

  • Manual dexterity
  • Physical stamina
  • Knowledge of anatomy
  • Massage techniques
  • Therapy and counseling
  • Operating equipment
  • Managing patient records
  • Diagnosis and assessment of physical conditions
  • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook)
  • Calendar and scheduling software
  • Medical software (Massage Suite and Land Software Customer Pro-File)

In addition to your hard skills, here are some soft skills that complement your massage therapy expertise:

  • Patience
  • Empathy
  • Attention to detail
  • Communication skills
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Adaptability
  • Ability to remain calm in stressful situations

3. Keep it concise

Though your qualifications may position you as a strong candidate, nothing turns off the hiring manager faster than a lengthy or disorganized resume. For optimal results, present your skills and experience in massage therapy in a one-page resume.

Any longer, and it’s likely your resume will be too wordy or include information that isn’t necessary. That said, the only exception is if you have 10+ years of professional experience and need the extra space to list previous roles.

Here’s how to achieve the ideal massage therapy resume length:

  • Choose an appropriate resume font and set your font size to 10.5–12 points depending on how much space you need
  • Set your resume margins to ½” to 1” on each side
  • Cut jobs or experience where the skills aren’t transferable
  • Look closely at the job posting to uncover any job-specific skills the hiring manager is seeking. Modify your bullet points on the basis of this information.
  • When listing past responsibilities under your professional experience, keep it concise and focus on your achievements rather than describing your duties
