How to write a business resume

Whether you’re a business administrator, CFO, or consultant, you’ll need a convincing business resume to differentiate yourself from other applicants.

Below you’ll find our top tips for writing a business resume that stands out:

1. Start with an attention-grabbing resume introduction

A resume summary is a 3–5 sentence paragraph that provides a concise introduction to your resume and convinces hiring managers to read your resume more closely.

An effective resume summary should highlight your:

  • years in the industry
  • skills
  • experience
  • accomplishments

Here’s an example of a good business resume summary:

Certified Public Accountant with 4+ years of experience in internal and external auditing. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify areas of improvement and develop effective solutions. Comfortable working in fast-paced and dynamic environments, with a proven ability to meet tight deadlines and deliver high-quality results.

If you’re changing careers or don’t have much work experience to highlight, write a resume objective instead.

Here are some examples to use as a guide:

Ambitious business student with a passion for strategic management, marketing, and financial analysis, seeking an internship opportunity to apply classroom knowledge in a real-world setting. Eager to contribute to a dynamic business environment, enhance problem-solving skills, and gain hands-on experience to complement academic studies.

Results-oriented business development specialist with a keen understanding of market trends and customer needs. Eager to contribute to the success of a dynamic company by implementing effective sales strategies, cultivating strategic partnerships, and driving business expansion.

Strategic business consultant with expertise in market analysis, customer segmentation, and go-to-market strategies. Committed to helping clients achieve business objectives, seeking a role where I can leverage experience and analytical skills to deliver value-added solutions. Aiming to drive competitive advantage and business growth through impactful strategies.

2. Back up your achievements with hard numbers

You should always quantify your accomplishments on your resume wherever possible. Providing examples of specific, measurable results adds credibility to your claims and helps potential employers understand the concrete value you can bring to their organization.

For example:

  • Increased regional sales by 32% over 18 months, outperforming company average by 15%
  • Led a cross-functional team of 25 employees across 3 departments
  • Implemented cost-saving measures that reduced annual overhead by $250,000

If you’re not sure what hard data you can add to your business resume, here are some ideas:

  • Revenue growth (%)
  • Sales figures ($)
  • Cost reduction ($ or %)
  • Profit margin increase (%)
  • Market share growth (%)
  • Customer acquisition numbers
  • Customer retention rate (%)
  • Employee turnover reduction (%)
  • Productivity increase (%)
  • Project completion time reduction (days/weeks)
  • Budget savings ($)
  • Return on Investment (ROI) (%)
  • Lead generation increase (%)
  • Conversion rate improvement (%)
  • Website traffic growth (%)
  • Social media engagement metrics
  • Time saved through process improvements (hours/days)
  • Error rate reduction (%)
  • Customer satisfaction scores
  • Number of successful product launches

3. Shine a spotlight on your relevant skills

When writing a business resume, it’s essential to highlight the skills that are most relevant to the job you’re applying for.

Start by carefully reviewing the job description and identifying the key skills required for the role. Then, assess your own skill set and determine which of your abilities best match the skills the employer is looking for.

Here are some in-demand business skills to consider including in your skills section:

  • Data analysis
  • Financial modeling
  • Project management
  • SQL
  • Microsoft Office Suite
  • Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software
  • Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems
  • Digital marketing tools
  • Business intelligence software
  • Programming languages (e.g., Python, R)
  • Accounting software
  • Statistical analysis
  • Supply chain management
  • Business process improvement
  • Foreign language skills

In addition to a dedicated skills section, incorporate your relevant skills throughout your resume. Use bullet points under each job entry to describe how you applied your skills to achieve specific results.

For example, instead of simply listing “project management” as a skill, describe a specific project you managed, the challenges you faced, and the outcomes you achieved.

By strategically highlighting your relevant skills and providing concrete examples of how you’ve applied them in professional settings, you’ll demonstrate to potential employers that you’re qualified to excel in the open role and contribute to their success.

4. Emphasize your education

Your educational background can be a powerful asset on your business resume, demonstrating your knowledge base, commitment to learning, and specialized skills.

Start by listing your degrees in reverse chronological order, providing the name of the institution, degree name, and graduation date. For example:

EDUCATION

Master of Business Administration
Harvard Business School
May 20XX

Bachelor of Science in Economics
University of California, Berkeley, CA
June 20XX

Additionally, list any relevant certifications or professional development courses you’ve completed. If you have one or two certifications, you can put them in your education section. If you have three or more, put them in their own designated section, like this:

CERTIFICATIONS

Project Management Professional (PMP)
Project Management Institute
Certified: September 20XX

Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA)
ISACA
Certified: November 20XX

Six Sigma Black Belt
American Society for Quality (ASQ)
Certified: March 20XX
