How to improve your digital marketing resume

Here are three ways to quickly show the person reviewing your digital marketing resume that you’re a good fit for the role.

Quantify your achievements with numbers

Success in digital marketing is measured in data. Employers can more quickly understand how you’d benefit the business if you use numbers to quantify your achievements on your resume instead of just listing your duties.

Here are some examples of resume experience bullets that show quantified achievements in SEM, SEO, and social media marketing:

Quantified

  • Managed a $30k/month Google Ads budget, decreasing CPA by 15% while increasing conversions by 22% in Q3.
  • Authored and optimized 15 blog posts, resulting in 3 ranking on the first page of Google for target keywords and driving a 40% increase in organic traffic.
  • Grew our Instagram following from 5k to 12k in 8 months organically by implementing a new content pillar strategy and weekly Reels.

Compare those bullets above to the same ones below that just list the candidate’s basic duties at work:

Not quantified

  • Managed the company’s Google Ads budget.
  • Wrote SEO blog posts and increased traffic.
  • Grew the company’s Instagram account.

To quantify your achievements, go through your duties and ask yourself the following questions:

  • How much? (e.g., how much budget did you manage?)
  • How many? (e.g., how many leads did you generate or how many followers did you gain?)
  • By how much? (e.g., by what percentage did you increase traffic, open rates, or conversions?)
  • How quickly? (e.g., did you achieve a goal within a specific timeframe, like within 6 months or in Q3?)

Include digital marketing skills from the job ad

Your resume should mention the specific marketing skills the job ad asks for, so employers know you’re qualified to do the work they’re hiring for.

Many companies use ATS systems to scan resumes for keywords before a real person even looks at applications — so adding the skills the company already identified as important will help you pass this stage.

Once you know what skills will help you get ahead, describe them in two ways:

Hard skills

List your hard skills (i.e., technical abilities) individually so the employer can quickly see which software you can use and whether you’re qualified for the role.

For example, by creating a dedicated resume skills section, like this:

Skills

SEO (Ahrefs, Semrush)

SEM (Google Ads)

Paid social campaigns (Meta, LinkedIn)

Email marketing (Hubspot, Mail Chimp)

GA4 & Google Search Console

Content marketing & copywriting

A/B testing & CRO

If you have a relevant certification from HubSpot, Hootsuite, or Google Ads (or similar), list it in your skills section too. However, if you have more than two certifications, create a separate section on your resume for them.

To help you stand out even more from other candidates, the infographic below shows the most common industry hard skills that employers are looking for:

Infographic showing the most in demand digital marketing hard skills according to real job ads

Soft skills

When hiring for digital marketing roles, employers may also mention soft skills like communication, attention to detail, and project management in the job ad, or expect you to demonstrate them in the interview.

These skills are personality traits that show how well you work with others, and may be the deciding factor when companies choose between candidates.

Listing soft skills as bullets doesn’t tell the employer much about you. Therefore, the best way to add these skills is to weave them into the bullet points in your work experience section, like this:

Digital Marketing Specialist
ABC Company | 20XX–Present

  • Partnered with product, design, and sales teams to translate complex campaign goals into clear briefs that tightened cross-department alignment and reduced revision cycles by 30%.
  • Led weekly client check-ins to present performance insights in plain language, helping non-technical stakeholders confidently approve strategic pivots that increased quarterly ROI by 18%.
  • Wrote and refined multi-channel messaging guidelines that ensured consistent brand voice across email, social, and paid media, contributing to a 22% lift in engagement rates.

In the example above, the candidate uses action verbs to demonstrate how they used communication skills in real situations. This approach provides employers with evidence of the candidate’s skillset, as well as the outcomes it helped achieved.

Here are the most common types of soft skills you’ll see requested in digital marketing job ads:

Treat your resume like a marketing report

To truly stand apart from other candidates, use your resume to emphasize to employers what problems you solved. Take inspiration from your own marketing reports and structure each resume bullet point to show challenges, actions, and results.

Use the Resume Genius STAR formula to do this:

Situation: What challenge did you face?
Task:
What were your responsibilities and goals?
Action:
What actions did you take to address the challenge?
Result:
What was the quantifiable outcome of your actions?

See how this level of detail overhauls your bullet points:

Before:

Created a new email marketing strategy that achieved 18% open rates.

After:

Overhauled a stagnant email program by developing a new segmentation strategy and A/B testing subject lines, which lifted open rates by 18% and generated $50k in attributable revenue within 6 months.

Companies hire for open roles to solve problems, and using this formula positions you as someone who will help meet their business goals.

Expert advice for digital marketers of different experience levels and backgrounds

How you lay out your digital marketing resume depends on your experience level. We created the three digital marketing resume examples on this page with this in mind.

I asked our in-house content marketing manager, Conrad Benz, to go into more detail about how entry-level candidates, experienced candidates trying to get a more senior role, and career changers new to marketing should approach their resumes.

Writing your first digital marketing resume

For candidates trying to get their first digital marketing job without previous work experience in the industry, Conrad suggests making structural changes to your resume:

“The best way to get your foot in the door in marketing is to show initiative. Add a projects section to your resume above your work history that explains transferable experience, like a website you created or a nonprofit you helped. You can also sign up for free trials of marketing software, practice using them, and then add them to your skills section.”

Stepping up to a manager position

Conrad has helped numerous candidates optimize their resumes so they can move into digital marketing manager roles:

“If you want to show you can handle more responsibility and deserve that high pay cheque, you need to focus on impact more than execution on your resume. Include examples of leadership, ownership of budgets, and clear business results throughout, but make sure they’re clear in your resume summary at the top.”

Transitioning to marketing from another career

Because digital marketing is tech-forward, pays well, and offers remote work options, transitioning from other fields is a common choice. Many other career paths, such as journalism, teaching, and public relations, offer complementary skillsets. Conrad suggests:

“If you’re a career changer, don’t worry about job titles. Focus on your transferable skills instead. Follow a functional resume format and use the summary section to explain how your past experience applies to digital marketing. If you have gaps in your skillset, gain some certifications online to show that you’re up to speed with the latest tools.”

US digital marketer salary data [check before applying for jobs]

After you’ve written your resume, make sure you use it to apply for jobs within a fair salary range.

The following table includes information from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics’ latest Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics report for 2025. Here are the ten states with the highest salaries for digital marketers, as well as the national average for your reference when applying for work.
