How to write a business administrator resume

Whether you’re a recent college graduate with a business administration degree, changing careers, or already have several years of relevant work experience, finding a new role in business administration requires writing an effective resume highlighting your skills and experience.

Here are three writing tips on writing a good resume for business administration professionals so you can receive interviews and succeed in this career path:

1. Highlight your business administration–related hard and soft skills

Although it depends on the business and specific department, you’ll need a variety of hard and soft skills to thrive in any office environment and keep businesses running smoothly.

First, be sure to highlight your hard skills (technical knowledge you’ve gained from schooling, on-the-job experience, or training).

For instance, business administration relies heavily on computers and keeping track of information through databases (e.g., Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets), so listing your computer skills tells employers you’re up-to-date with technology and capable of learning new software if hired.

And larger organizations might require you to come up with strategic goals and marketing plans to boost their company’s growth, so include your project management abilities in the skills section of your resume.

Here are other business administration–related hard skills for your resume:

  • Accounting processes
  • Administrative skills
  • Data entry
  • Financial management
  • HR knowledge
  • Language skills
  • Math skills
  • Preparing reports
  • QuickBooks
  • Record keeping
  • Scheduling appointments
  • Completing payroll

Next, don’t forget about your soft skills (abilities showing how you relate to colleagues or clients in a professional setting). For example, tasks like managing staff, providing customer service, and preparing reports require both excellent communication skills and organizational skills.

Below are some examples of soft skills for business administrators:

  • Attention to detail
  • Creativity
  • Customer service skills
  • Event planning
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Leadership skills
  • People skills
  • Management skills
  • Self-initiative
  • Teamwork skills

And besides listing these skills in your resume’s skills section, you should also include examples of times when you’ve excelled in these areas in your work experience bullet points so employers can directly understand the positive impact in your previous roles.

Here’s an example of how a business administration applicant’s resume bullet point illustrates their time management skills:

Collaborated with 4 HR department staff during busy hiring seasons by processing job applications, updating SOPs, and onboarding new staff through PGT’s new online system on time, resulting in praise from the Head of HR and a 10% higher bonus

Look up resumes for departments you’ve worked with, such as an HR resume or a recruiter resume for the example above. They can give you some ideas for how to write about your own experiences.

2. Write a descriptive resume objective targeting your ideal role

Writing a 2–4 sentence resume objective for a business administration role describing your motivation for applying to a position is a great way to show employers you’ve personalized your application to their requirements.

For example, if you’re applying for an administrative assistant position, your objective might state that you’re seeking a position where you can use your organizational skills to help the company run smoothly.

By contrast, if you want a marketing-related role, you can mention how you want to use your creativity to implement effective marketing campaigns.

In either case, emphasizing your job-specific skills, educational background, and relevant experience is essential. By tailoring your resume objective directly to the position you want, you’ll increase your chances of employers noticing your business administrator resume and considering you for an interview.

Have a look at how this resume objective targets an entry-level business administrative assistant position:

3. Write an attention-grabbing education section

While giving potential employers a well-rounded view of your skills and job-specific experience are important, you can also try expanding your education section to capture their attention.

Here’s what you can add to the education section of your resume to show hiring managers you’re passionate about business and continuing to learn about it in your spare time:

  • relevant coursework
  • professional development workshops or seminars you attended
  • licenses and certifications

Below, our business administration candidate’s education section contains their degree information as well as their relevant coursework:

Associate of Applied Science in Business Administration
Graduated May 2022, Jackson College, MI

Relevant coursework: Macroeconomics, Technical Business Writing, Principles of Marketing, Principles of Accounting, Business Law
