How to write a general healthcare resume

No matter your exact profession within the healthcare field, you can follow the following tips to write an outstanding healthcare resume that will increase your chances of getting an interview:

1. Showcase your healthcare-related qualifications

Most healthcare jobs require a specific degree as well as specialized training, and this makes your education section one of the most important parts of your healthcare resume.

Because of this, it’s important to format it correctly, so hiring managers can see that you’re qualified for the job you’re applying for. Here’s an example of a properly formatted education section for a healthcare professional, listing both their most recent degree, and a certification:

EDUCATION

Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology
University of Maryland, College Park, MD
May 20XX

Certified Physical Therapy Aide (CPTA)
American Medical Certification Association
October 20XX

If you have more than two certifications, put them in their own designated certifications section, like this:

CERTIFICATIONS

Certified Home Health Aide (HHA)
California Department of Public Health
Issued: March 20XX

Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers
American Heart Association
Issued: June 20XX
Expires: June 20XX

Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia Care Training
National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners
Completed: September 20XX

2. Highlight your industry-specific skills

While healthcare resumes will look very different depending on the exact field you’re in, there are some common hard skills that are required to perform many healthcare jobs. So, it’s important to include them on your resume and show potential employers that you have the basic skills needed.

Here are some skills to include on your resume if you have them:

  • Electronic Health Records (EHR) management
  • Medical coding and billing
  • Equipment operation
  • Phlebotomy
  • Vital signs measurement
  • CPR and Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Patient assessment techniques
  • Medication administration
  • Wound care and dressing changes
  • Sterile technique and infection control
  • Medical equipment operation (e.g., ECG, ultrasound)
  • Laboratory testing procedures
  • Diagnostic imaging (X-ray, MRI, CT scan)
  • Injections and vaccinations
  • Patient positioning and transfer techniques
  • Medical terminology
  • HIPAA compliance and patient confidentiality
  • Telemedicine platforms
  • Health informatics
  • Pharmacology knowledge
  • Crisis intervention

And don’t forget about the “care” part of healthcare. Interpersonal skills, especially good communication, reliability, and empathy, are important for clearly explaining health problems, finding solutions, and reducing patient stress.

Soft skills like these should be mentioned in your resume’s bullet points.

Here’s what that might look like on a healthcare resume:

  • Consistently received positive feedback from patients and colleagues for clear, compassionate communication in high-stress situations

Here are some other soft skills that are important for healthcare professionals to have:

  • Adaptability
  • Emotional intelligence
  • Active listening
  • Patience
  • Cultural sensitivity
  • Stress management
  • Conflict resolution
  • Compassion
  • Resilience

3. Add data to give context to your work experience

You should always quantify the achievements in your work experience section whenever possible. Concrete numbers and figures provide tangible evidence of your impact and effectiveness in previous roles, which lets hiring managers know what you’ll be capable of accomplishing if hired.

Instead of a vague description of your past job duties, quantify your work experience into powerful, measurable accomplishments that grab the attention of potential employers.

Here are some examples:

  • Managed a caseload of 20+ patients daily
  • Implemented a new cataloging system that reduced medication errors by 15%
  • Maintained a 100% compliance rate with hand hygiene protocols

And here are some ideas for things you can quantify on a healthcare resume:

  • Patients seen daily/weekly/monthly
  • Patient satisfaction scores
  • Treatment success rates
  • Reduction in readmission rates
  • Number of procedures performed
  • Accuracy rate in diagnoses
  • Medication error reduction
  • Number of staff trained or mentored
  • Compliance rates with safety protocols
  • Reduction in wait times
  • Improvement in health outcomes (e.g., recovery rates)
  • Number of care plans developed
  • Number of successful interventions

4. Write a healthcare resume objective that quickly conveys your qualifications

Your resume objective should immediately capture the hiring manager’s attention by showing them you’re a qualified candidate in 2-3 sentences.

Here are some examples of good resume objectives for healthcare professionals:

Home health aide resume

Dedicated Home Health Aide with 4+ years of experience caring for elderly and disabled clients. Proficient in personal care, medication reminders, and light housekeeping. Recognized for developing strong rapport with clients and their families. Seeking a role with a hospice care provider to offer compassionate end-of-life support.

Dialysis technician resume

Compassionate Dialysis Technician with 3+ years of experience in outpatient clinics. Proficient in hemodialysis procedures and equipment maintenance. Recognized for providing empathetic care and educating patients on kidney health. Seeking a position in a hospital dialysis unit to gain experience with acute care patients and advanced dialysis modalities.

Physical therapy aide resume

Energetic Physical Therapy Aide with 2+ years of experience in orthopedic rehabilitation. Skilled in assisting therapists with exercise routines and maintaining a clean, safe environment. Commended for motivating patients and contributing to a 30% increase in positive outcomes. Looking for a position in a sports medicine clinic to specialize in athletic injury rehabilitation.
