3 real estate cover letter writing tips

Agencies are always looking for real estate agents who can increase their revenue and provide exceptional client and customer service.

To show that you’re a great real estate agent, you’ll need to know how to write a cover letter that properly displays your experience and skills to a hiring manager to be invited for an interview.

Below, we’ve included three professional writing tips for crafting an outstanding real estate agent cover letter:

1. Start with a well-written introduction (even with no experience)

Hiring managers typically review dozens of applications for a single realtor position. Your cover letter introduction helps grab their attention by giving the employer an overview of your expertise and letting them know you’re a worthy candidate for the position.

To craft a great cover letter introduction, you’ll need to follow these three steps:

Start by stating the real estate position you’re applying for and where you found it (website name, etc.)
Briefly give an overview of your experience, skills or other qualifications that are directly relevant to the realtor position you’re applying for (to pique the hiring manager’s interest)
End with brief sentence stating that (because of the experience and skills you just listed) you’re confident in your abilities to contribute to their team and help them sell homes.

Here’s an example of a well-written cover letter introduction for a real estate agent:

However, even if you’re a recent graduate or going through a career change and have little or no experience as a real estate agent, you can still craft a great introduction.

Start by listing the relevant credentials you’ve already gained, such as your real estate license and your transferable skills.

Transferable skills typically come from professional work experience, but they can also be gained in your academic career by taking relevant coursework, participating in extracurricular activities, or doing an internship.

Here’s an example of a well-written real estate cover letter introduction for a recent graduate:

Researching the company you want to work for (especially when you have no experience) is always helpful when preparing your cover letter. If you can include examples of how you’ll help them achieve their goals, it makes you a more desirable candidate.

2. Highlight your real estate agent skills

As a real estate agent, you’re responsible for collaborating with property owners, buyers, and other industry professionals to sell homes, which requires a range of hard and soft skills to do well.

Hiring managers will be looking for necessary realtor skills in your cover letter, such as having great communication skills, interpersonal skills, and knowledge of the local real estate market.

Here’s a list of 20 real estate agent skills to highlight in your cover letter:

In the above example, not only does the candidate show they’ve exceeded their annual sales quotas, but they also demonstrate they’ve helped prepare for and trained sales agents, and managed daily administrative tasks (which tells the hiring manager they have management skills).

3. Provide examples of your achievements (with numbers)

Lastly, similar to when writing your work experience section on your resume, it’s always best to use hard numbers when providing examples of your career accomplishments on your cover letter.

This is because hiring managers need a metric to gauge your work performance. Simply stating your job duties and responsibilities isn’t that impressive, nor does it tell the hiring manager much about your contribution as a realtor to your previous or current firm.

Here are three examples of how to quantify your career achievements on your real estate cover letter (using hard numbers):

Increased revenue from leased properties by 47%
