According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the healthcare industry is expected to grow by 16% between 2020 and 2030. It’s never been a better time to get into or advance yourself in the healthcare field.
No matter your exact profession, follow our six tips to write an outstanding healthcare resume:
First, include the most relevant hard skills for your specific healthcare role in your resume.
To find out what skills are most important to the employer, read the job ad carefully and make note of any specific abilities or qualifications mentioned. These should be highlighted throughout your resume.
If the ad doesn’t contain a detailed description, scan other job descriptions for the same job title and see which common skills emerge.
Don’t forget about the “care” part of healthcare. Interpersonal skills, especially good communication, reliability, and empathy, are important for clearly explaining health problems, finding solutions, and reducing patient stress.
If you’re directly working with patients, use some of the following resume adjectives to describe the qualities that make you well-suited for a healthcare role:
A resume bullet point that successfully emphasizes your interpersonal skills could look something like this:
Provided compassionate guidance to help patients manage their mental health challenges and offered emotional support to their families
While a school nurse resume will be very different from a resume written by a speech language pathologist, there are some common hard skills that apply to most healthcare professionals that will strengthen your application. Here are two particularly important hard skills to highlight on your healthcare resume:
Record-keeping
From diagnoses to test results to insurance claims, record-keeping is instrumental when working in healthcare.
Note your level of experience with the exact software used at your desired workplace, if specified in the job description, to show the hiring manager that you won’t require as much training as other candidates.
If you’re not sure what software is used at the facility you’re applying to work at, here are some examples of record-keeping software commonly used in healthcare settings:
Familiarity with healthcare equipment
Medical devices play an integral role in patient diagnosis, treatment, and overall care. No matter what kind of healthcare role you’re targeting, you’ll need to be familiar with various equipment.
Demonstrating proficiency with the type of equipment you’ll be using to perform your day-to-day duties will help you convince employers you have the technical abilities required for the role.
In contrast to “climbing the corporate ladder,” many healthcare professionals receive specialized training to reach and settle into permanent positions. For example, a pharmacist will likely work at different places under the same job title rather than change job titles at a single workplace.
If you’ve occupied similar roles at different workplaces, your resume doesn’t have to be repetitive. Describe different hard and soft skills that you used at each job, even if your main duties were the same.
In situations where you’ve advanced to a new job title, use the space under your junior roles to describe the fundamental skills you mastered and probably still use in your more senior role. For senior positions, discuss high-level responsibilities and management skills.
Another way to make each work experience entry unique is to quantify your bullet points to highlight specific achievements. For example, you could mention how many patients you treated per day.
Similar to your education section, your certifications section is important for convincing the hiring manager that you can do the job well.
List all of your relevant certifications on your resume to show employers you’re fully qualified for the role you want. Even if the job description doesn’t require certain additional specialties, including them shows the hiring manager you:
Make sure you format your certifications correctly according to your subfield. For example, here is how a radiologic technologist would list credentials:
The healthcare industry is changing, due in large part to an increasingly aging population and advances in technology.
Healthcare is expected to become more personalized, there has been a shift toward preventive medicine, and jobs in home care are likely to increase.
Keeping these trends in mind when you write your resume and showing that you’re flexible and prepared to adjust to these changes will make you a more competitive candidate for healthcare jobs.
Depending on the types of positions you’re applying for, show that you:
This will ensure you come across as adaptable and ready to face the new challenges that come with changing working conditions.
