How to write a medical scribe resume

A medical scribe helps busy physicians keep track of complex medical records and manage patient care data.

But hospitals and clinics will only hire candidates who can demonstrate their skills and experience as a scribe.

Prove you’re the person they’re looking for with a descriptive, well-written medical scribe resume by checking out our four writing tips below.

1. Open with a strong resume introduction

Start your resume off with a great introduction to grab the hiring manager’s attention and help yourself stand out from other candidates.

There are two routes you can take when making a resume introduction. First, if you’re a medical scribe candidate with little to no experience, you’ll want to make a resume objective.

A resume objective highlights you’re a motivated candidate and ready to quickly adapt to the position by ending with a statement explaining how you’ll help the hospital or clinic achieve its mission and goals.

You should also include any relevant experience, qualifications, or skills in your resume objective (if you have them) for the hiring manager to see.

Here’s an example of a medical scribe resume objective:

OBJECTIVE

Motivated pre-med medical scribe candidate currently pursing a Bachelor in Biology at University of Illinois. Proficient with basic medical terminology and Microsoft Office suite, and able to type 70+ WPM. Great communication and customer service skills. Seeking to fill the medical scribe position at Greater Illinois Hospital to assist doctors in delivering excellent patient care.

On the other hand, more-experienced medical scribes will want to craft a resume summary.

The main difference between a resume summary and an objective is that an objective focuses on your long-term goals. In contrast, a summary highlights your most impressive career achievements (along with your qualifications and experience).

Here’s an example of a resume summary for an experienced medical scribe:

SUMMARY

Dedicated Medical Scribe with 9+ years of experience in dynamic health care settings. Adept at scheduling and coordinating patient treatments, collecting information for patient visits, and helping physicians deliver effective patient care. Proficient in data entry and documenting patient medical history, lab and X-ray results, and recording consultations with health care professionals, patients, and family members.

2. Customize your resume according to the job description

Many hospitals use applicant tracking systems (ATS) to scan incoming resumes for keywords found in the online job description.

These keywords usually concern specific skill sets and experience the company deems necessary to do the job efficiently.

To make sure your medical scribe resume ends up on a hiring manager’s desk and isn’t automatically discarded by their system, you’ll need to write an ATS-friendly resume by scanning the job description for requirements and skills that match your experience.

You can then include those keywords (that match your background and expertise) in many different parts of your medical scribe resume, such as in your skills section, work experience, and even resume introduction.

Here’s an example of how to include medical scribe keywords in your work experience section, with the ATS keywords bolded:

  • Maintain 100% accuracy of medical records by entering patients’ information into EMR
  • Manage various health care-related tasks, such as conducting diagnostic tests, sending prescriptions to pharmacies, and educating patients on treatment procedures
  • Recorded 3,000+ patients’ medical histories, test results, and vital signs
  • Streamlined the patient scheduling system, reducing patient wait time by 40%
  • Coordinate the treatment of 100+ patients in accordance with FDA guidelines

Then, upload your resume to our free ATS resume scanner to make sure it’s ATS-compatible.

3. Include a detailed work experience section

Hospital hiring managers will also want to see a detailed work experience section on your medical scribe resume. Because the job requires a lot of data entry, you’ll need to display that you’re quick, efficient, and accurate with how you transcribe patient medical data:

When filling out your work experience section, focus on the accomplishments you made in your work. This gives hospital hiring managers a more precise picture of your hands-on experience.

If you’re not sure what type of accomplishments to include, focus on the following four key pieces of information:

  • medication (for example, quinidine vs quinine) and dosage details (10 μg vs 1.0 μg)
  • appointment information
  • test results
  • diagnoses (for example, diverticulosis vs diverticulitis)

Additionally, you should add hard numbers to your work experience bullet points to show employers the impact you made at work.

Consider the following when including hard numbers on your medical scribe resume:

  • number of patients’ data you entered
  • time saved when completing tasks
  • percentage increase in efficiency

Now, here’s an example of a medical scribe work experience with key details and hard numbers added:

  • Streamline the patient scheduling system, reducing patient wait time by 40%.
  • Documented medical history of 1500+ patients while maintaining 99% record accuracy according to external audit results.

These bullet points make it clear that the medical scribe candidate can handle many patients, is accurate in their data entry, and took the initiative to make the office more streamlined, leading to a considerable increase in efficiency.

4. Highlight your medical scribe skills

Because medical scribes assist physicians in many ways, there are a variety of skills needed to perform the job proficiently that you should include in your resume’s skills section.

Common hard skills required for medical scribe jobs include data entry, knowledge of medical terminology, and proficiency in using electronic health care records systems.

Reassure hiring managers you have the skills they need by including these medical scribe skills on your resume:

  • Electronic medical record (EMR) software (eClinicalWorks, Epic Systems)
  • General computer skills
  • Office suite software (Google Suite, Microsoft Office)
  • Basic medical knowledge
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Typing skills

However, your technical expertise isn’t everything. It’s also essential to have some soft skills if you want to be hired as a scribe. For example, you should have good communication and interpersonal skills because you’ll deal with patients and physicians daily.

You’ll also need great attention to detail to accurately transcribe all medical data into electronic hospital records.

Unlike listing hard skills on your resume, you shouldn’t just list soft skills. Instead, highlight them in your experience section with specific examples demonstrating how you used your soft skills to accomplish something.

Ensure the resume format you use showcases your skills and accomplishments effectively.
